Tactics
In general, Josef Hickersberger relies on a cautious approach. Usually, Austria play a 4-4-2 system, though the coach could well opt for a 4-5-1 in the opening game, against Croatia, as his team find their feet.
Strong defence
Austria’s greatest asset is their strong defence, which is led by Stranzl and Pogatetz. Prodl will partner Stranzl in central defence. Cover comes from Gercaliu, Ibertsberger and Schiemer.
Skipper and playmaker Ivanschitz is the midfield leader. The other creative force is Leitgeb. Aufhauser will take the defensive midfield role, with Saumel as a possible replacement. Fuchs offers penetration on the left, with full-back Garics always keen to push forward on the right.
Toothless attack
Hickersberger’s biggest problem is the forward line’s toothlessness. The first-choices are Linz and Kuljic, both in form at club level. But if they continue to misfire for Austria, Hoffer and Harnik could be given a start.
Ivica Vastic was included in the provisional, 31-man squad for the finals, though the coach is believed to be worried that the veteran striker may disrupt his system.
