England fans celebrate in a fountain outside the train station in Lille city centre after England’s win against Wales in Lens.

What a difference a day makes. Twenty four hours ago, the French authorities were managing a potentially hazardous security situation involving fans from a number of nations, though largely, it has to be said, those from England, after a nightof sporadic violence in Lille. But, thankfully, the day passed off relatively peacefully, no doubt helped by the last minute England winner, which sent most of their fans home happy, albeit inebriated.

Three more games today, kicking off with Italy facing Sweden in Toulouse, followed by Czech Republic Croatia in Saint-Etienne and the day’s action concludes with the holders, Spain, meeting Turkey in Nice.

Day 7 recap

Ukraine 0 Northern Ireland 2

Gareth McAuley celebrates putting Northern Ireland ahead against Ukraine.

There have been few more joyous senes at Euro 2016 than those witnessed in Lyon on Thursday, where Northern Ireland, perhaps relishing the traditional Irish summer conditions – the match was stopped briefy due a hailstorm – defeated a poor Ukraine side 2-0.

Earlier in the day, England prevailed over Wales in the so-called Battle of Britain. Trailing 1-0 at half-time, coach Roy Hodgson acted decisively and introduced Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge and was rewarded for his initiative when both scored in a frantic second half in Lens.

The less said about the final match of the day the better, as Germand and Poland ground out a dull 0-0 draw in Paris. It was not exactly a repeat of the infamous 1982 anschluss match between West Germany and Austria, but with a draw suiting both teams, this was a game played with handbrakes on.
