Style:  Charismatic, bespectacled motivator.

Future:  Contracted until 2018 and with huge emotional ties to Dortmund, but could be tempted by a really top job.

Current status:  Led Ajax to their fourth successful Eredivisie title, a record for a coach.

Past:  Ajax youth coach, Holland assistant coach at the 2010 World Cup.

Style:  Committed to youth and the Ajax/Barcelona system of possession-based attack.

Future:  Has been linked with Tottenham but may set his sights higher.

4 Luciano Spalletti

Nationality:  Italian

Current status:  Unemployed after leaving Zenit in March.

Past:  Took Udinese and Roma into the Champions League. Won two Russian league titles with Zenit.

Style:  Ambitious, attacking tactics – his Roma played 4-6-0.

Current status:  Unemployed after a relatively unsuccessful season at Barcelona

Future:  A top job back in Argentina, possibly the national side if Alex Sabella moves on after the World Cup.

Nationality:  Portuguese

Current status:  Unemployed after a spell earning petro-dollars in Saudi Arabia with Al Ahli

Past:  Succeeded Andre Villas-Boas at Porto and won back-to-back Portuguese league titles in 2012 and 2013

Style:  Thoughtful, attack-minded, good with young players

Future:  A return to a European league

Nationality:  Italian

Current status:  Unattached after leaving Galatasaray

Past:  Won the Italian Cup with Fiorentina and Lazio and the Serie A title with Internazionale. Steered Manchester City to their first English league title for 44 years.

Style: Tactical flexibility, high media profile takes weight off players, but questionable man-management.

Future:  A return to Italy is on the cards at some point, possibly with the national team, but he may fancy his luck in Spain.
