Ronaldo is apparently a 'modern day slave'...
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but...I'm pretty sure slaves never got paid. In addition, and again I grant you I may be mistaken, I'm fairly certain slaves didn't voluntarily enter an agreement with their 'employers'...
As I say, I could be wrong...

You are spot on richie. I dont wish to discuss Sepp Blatter's ridiculous comments much as i have already expressed my distaste towards him, it just baffles me that this man is in charge of the World Game. Cristiano Ronaldo unfortunately agrees with all that numbskull Blatter claims but what the United man seems to be forgetting is that he signed a deal, knowing full well how long the contract was for. I have mentioned on previous threads that contracts are not worth a carrot and my opinion has not changed. Players seem to have more power these days than managers and chairmen, but a strong stance should be taken against wantaway players who dont have the common decency to honour their contracts. Ronaldo along with most football players earn more in one week than we can take a year or longer to earn. Are we the slaves for working to put money on the table for our families plus paying the wages of the players, or are footballers really the slaves for being in such a privileged jobs? I know what side my bread is buttered.

I do not agree with the word 'slavery', which is insulting to the people who actually suffered it -and suffers it today-, but does everyone here disagree with a worker being able to choose where to work? Wouldn't you like that in your occupation? Are we just being jealous at someone who can do that, bending his bosses' will to his own in the way we wished we could?

I agree 100% with a worker being able to leave their contract and work for whomsoever at any point in time...yet something else football has failed to realise is standard practice in just about any other business in the world.
But to call oneself a 'slave' (yes it was Blatter that used the term, but he concurred) is frankly outrageous! Are they taking the p***???

Of course you should be entitled to work for any given employer but in the real world many of us have to make do with simply getting on by with what already have. So many footballers when they wish to leave a club make lame excuses such as "the club lacks ambition", Ronaldo's apparent wish to leave Manchester United can only be put down to greed. Why leave a club that are the current champions of Europe if it is not down to more money? Oh i forgot, Ronaldo's explanation will be "I need a fresh challenge, there is nothing else i can win with United as i have achieved all the success available". He is no ordinary worker, he does a so-called job he enjoys, gets paid handsomely, yet this appears not to be appreciated. Greed, thats one word that can be associated with Ronaldo and many current footballer's.
