A place here to discuss Russian Football
I get abit confused about the big Moscow teams, and how they were formed, one being the Army team, secret Police etc.
Can anyone inform me of which club represents what faction?

CSKA Moscow - the Army team. Lokomotiv - the Railway workers' team. Dynamo - formerly the team of the Secret Police (Laventry Beria, among others ...). Torpedo - club was run by Zil, an automobile plant, and was named after the first Soviet-built car, but a few years ago they split into two clubs - so there's now Torpedo Moscow and FC Moscow. Spartak - the people's team, their fans don't generally belong to any one class of Moscow society.
Actually the history of Soviet football and its relationship upon the people, and politics, in Soviet times is really interesting. Its a pity these once great clubs (and players/figures - Starostin, Streltsov, Netto, Yashin, Dasaev, Cherenkov) are struggling so badly in post-Soviet times, but then I guess that can be said for just about all the Eastern European clubs nowadays ...

Aren't Torpedo now languishing in the second division in front of meagre crowds?
Does anybody know how Zenit are doing recently? Last I heard they were promising much and not too many miles from challenging the Moscow elite.
It seems the Russian game is improving all the time, huge fanatism resulting in large crowds generally, the attraction of lucrative investors, enabling many foreigners (in particularly Brazilians) to grace the league.
It seems the Russian game is on the up, with clubs now establishing themselves in Europe, hence the Uefa cup success of CSKA 3 years ago.

Yes there certainly seems to be more money flowing into the Russian game nowadays, and I was pleased to see CSKA win the UEFA Cup in 2005. But Russian football in general is still in the doldrums ... allegations of corruption, and outbreaks of racism are still prevalent. The national side have failed to get past the 1st round of the World Cup since 1986 (then of course the USSR), and the performances of the recent Russian sides in major championships when they have managed to get to a major finals (WC 2002, EC 2004) have been bitterely disappointing. The major influx of foreigners hasn't helped the national cause either, even if it has improved the standard of the domestic league. Also (correct me if I'm wrong here) I dont believe any Russian side has made the knockout phase of the Champions League since Moscow Spartak in 1995/96 (Quarter-finals). But hopefully, with more investment flowing in to the Russian game, things will continue to improve ... Btw, yes, Torpedo Moscow were relegated last year alright. It is good to see that there are more regional sides making an impact too.

Thanks for clearing that up guy's with the factions they represent or represented.
One thing i wonder, i understand that a team for the people like Spartak were a force with a lot of fan power, but how do teams such as the Secret Police and Army Team manage to get any fans? Surely there cannot be to many people that would want to support them clubs in the past?
I'm asking this because in some leagues in Asia, you have teams formed on the back of Armies, Companies, etc and the only fans they get are the one's who work for them, thereofre the general interest from Asian fans to support teams such as Real Madrid or Man Utd, since they have no ties to for example, Thailand Tobacco Factory or the Royal Thai Police. Supporters over their get behind their country, but struggle to find a team that represents them.

Apart from being located in certain areas, the companies or institutions have a large staff/membership/worker population, so if (even) one of the regional army teams were playing you'd have the soldiers bussed in for the game. Which happens often in Asia.
Lokomotiv have a very hardcore following and would be very representative of the extreme right or nationalists (or Putin supporters).
Spartak are mixed but their fans are a pretty noxious bunch and organised fan fights are a usual occurrence (happening in a forest or meadow away from the stadium - lots of exampes on youtube).
But there is football outside of Moscow and St. pete's, some very interesting clubs and regions represented.

I agree that there are some very interesting teams and regions represented.
It's a kind of a shame that these clubs are not highly featured in magazines such as World Soccer.
A lot of clubs have vast history in football terms, but i find Russian clubs and a few more from other regions have a lot of history were the football team is closly tied to the Basketball team or whatever.
Once you delve in a little, their histories can be quiet interesting.

Looks like Spartak have a firm lead up there, and i expect them not to falter now.
Rostov clearly gone, but probably another 7 or so can get sucked into relegation.

They have a 5 point lead and pressure will happen, but 5 points is big at this stage.
Zenit will also feel the pressure, but should be an exciting end to the season. I predict Spartak will come through.... but just.

,
well,WS had the perfect oppurtunity during the summer but unfortunately, instead of doing a special on the summertime leagues throughout europe they chose instead to publish space filling drivel on the best this/that/player/team etc which unfortunately shows their focus now is the "big" leagues. I see Eurogoals is now featuring the Russian league on its main weekly programme

Just four games left in the Russian season and it looks like the title is between Spartak Moscow and the "new money" of Zenit St Petersburg. FC Moscow are also still in contention - three points behind the top two. CSKA are 8 points behind the leaders & surely out of it (and out of next year's CL - unless they win this one!)
Spartak P26 49 Zenit P26 49 FK Moscow P26 46
The top two both play three of their last four games at home. Both still have to play 3rd placed FK Moscow. And Spartak lead Zenit on head-to-head results - although should all three teams finish level (and this involve FK beating both their rivals) they would - I'm pretty sure - be Champions.

One big turn up for the books, the birthplace of VI Lenin will be represented, for the first time, in the 1st Division. It's a big success for a team largely lacking the financial clout of their bigger rivals. But good coaching, an excellent profesional set up and great youth policy has served Volga Ulyanovsk well! Go Hornets in 2008!!!

Zenit has bought two players one Tatar (don't remember his name) and Roman Shirokov. I'm not pleased.
