Colin Harvey was a classical type of midfield player. At his best he managed to pack into his tiny frame every attribute needed for the testing role. Liverpool-born, he made a dramatic first-team debut for Everton as an 18-year-old when he was thrown into a European Cup clash with the mighty Inter Milan in the famous San Siro stadium in 1963. It took time for the ultra-critical scrutineers of Goodison to accept him, but they ultimately realised that he was a player of genuine quality and style. He showed class in everything he did, linking it with colossal workrate, skill on the ball, excellent positional play and passing ability. Many would argue that he trained and performed with such vigour that he pushed his body beyond its limits, so cutting perhaps one or two years from what was an extraordinarily successful career. When he hit his peak he was a treat to watch, delighting football purists with his uncanny passing ability. He made only one England appearance, against Malta in 1971. With Howard Kendall and Alan Ball he formed the famous midfield triangle which steered Everton to the League Championship in 1970. After a superb Goodison career covering more than 380 first-team games, he was transferred to Sheffield Wednesday in 1974. His career was brought to an untimely end by a niggling hip injury. He returned to Everton in 1976 to work behind behind the scenes with the clubs youngsters. His promotion to first-team coach in 1983 helped spark Everton’s much vaunted revival and after Kendall’s departure he was appointed manager of the club.
