The Big Issue, Jul 2008: Best summer transfer?
|
|
' Which club has done the best bit of transfer business this summer? '
This one will need to wait not one, but two months.

Of the early signings Deco for £10m could be a huge bargain.

Firstly, a warm welcome to the forum ubeep along with all the recent newcomers. Deco may well be an exceptional buy for Chelsea, my concern however is although he still is a fine footballer, he may want too much time on the ball in a League that simply does not allow that slow tempo, composed. He is gifted enough a player to compensate that problem, but in terms of him adapting to the English pace may just be easier said than done. I will watch Deco with great interest once the season kicks-off.

So far I think Daniel Alves is a great buy for Barcelona, its a position which they needed strengthening from last year and the prospect of him teaming up with messi on the right could be one of the potent attacking weapons in europe

I will agree to the point Alves is (arguably) the best attacking full back in world football just now but Barca paid a huge amount of cash for him. (I think the total deal is worth about e35m) Crouch to Pompey for £10m could be another very astute signing by Redknapp, and Hleb to Barca, (if and when it goes through) could be a good buy for the Catalans.

Still early days yet but signing of Deco for £8m was a snip. May be 30 now but proved at 2008 that he was one of the best midfield players of the tournament. Think he will do okay with pace of game as with all good footballers has a great eye for killer pass. Whoever signs Etoo will do well as I rate him very highly also.

If it goes ahead Crouch going to Portsmouth will be a great transfer. He could be the link that pushes them into Champion League contention next season. If Modric or Dos Santos can settle into English football then I'd include those two transfers as well. I can't see Deco suiting the Premiership, no doubting his quality however I think he's too hot headed and volitile to put up with the footballing style in English.

Re: The Big Issue, Jul 2008: Best summer transfer?

While still early days in the summer's transfer merry-go-round a few pieces of business stand out.
The addition of Modric for "just" £16m appears shrewd from Spurs, given his strong performances at Euro 2008 and the interest of other suitors. Gomes' shot-stopping ability will also help the defence given Robinson's susceptibility to long range efforts. These, combined with the January purchases of Hutton and Woodgate, may help Spurs return to compete with the top 4 but the central midfield still looks fragile.
Barcelona's signing of Dani Alves for £25m could be an excellent addition if he can replicate the form he showed at Sevilla. Given the disappointments of the last two top level full-backs signed by the club (Zambrotta and Abidal) though, it may be another big money flop for Barca.

I think Fulham have done the best business so far in getting a reliable goalkeeper, which are hard to buy, in Mark Schwarzer, and Zoltan Gera, an creative midfielder who will definitely improve the quality of their squad, both for free!

Re: The Big Issue, Jul 2008: Best summer transfer?

With Milan's spending apparently at an end according to Adriano Galliani it must be judged as a mixed performance. The cut-price addition of Ronaldinho may prove to be the deal of the summer if he can recapture the form he showed in his early days at the Camp Nou. However, whether Ancelotti can revive Ronaldinho's passion for the game, and where he fits into a team already boasting Kaka, Seedorf and Pato seems unclear.
The return to the San Siro of Marco Boriello could be the signing Milan have needed so badly since Shevchenko's departure, though hopefully his arrival will not lead to Pato being left out. If Boriello can deliver the sort of performances that he put in at Genoa last year then Milan may have a formidable attack to contend with.
Elsewhere the signing are less convincing. Zambrotta remains one of the world's great full-backs and his ability to play on either flank will prove a considerable asset. At 31 though Zambrotta joins a defence desperate for an injection of youthful vigour. The departure of Cafu was a step in the right direction, but Maldini's volte face over his retirement may prove a mistake. Furthermore the lack of a new goalkeeper is likely to leave Milan exposed. Neither Dida nor Kalac has proven up to the task yet, and the rumours of a move for Boruc have not yet materialised.
In central midfield the signing of Flamini leaves Ancelotti with a surplus of holding players. Plainly Pirlo is the only "untouchable" among them, but with players of the calibre of Gattuso and Ambrosini available it seems unlikely that they can all be kept happy.

Pablo Aimar's switch from Real Zaragoza to Benfica is arguably the bargain of the summer has we stand. Costing the Portugese outfit around £5 million is an absolute steal. Maybe Aimar is not looked at as highly these days from his days at Valencia, but the 28-year-old still possesses class on the ball and is still a real threat from dead ball situations. This move for Aimar may not come under "Best Summer Transfer", but surely it must be be one of the shrewdest pieces of business completed thus far at a bargain price.

Whilst I hope I'm wrong, the worst transfer business so far appears to be at Ibrox. For a mere £1.9m for Kenny Miller, Rangers have secured lots of running around and 2 to 3 goals. Meanwhile goal-a-game Kris Boyd will be left on the bench. With Walter Smith set to persevere with one up front, he now has approximately one striker for every game of the season, but no midfield.

lol In stark contrast to Chelsea and Spurs who seem to forget that you can have all the creative midfielders in world football but if there is no striker to get on the end of it you may struggle to win matches.

Aimar is a good signing by Benfica.
For me I am looking forward to Zaki at Wigan. His Record in international football is 2nd to none and he certainly has the physique for the Premier league. If he can settle he could prove one of the outstanding buys.
As a club Pompey are doing the best overall business in my opinion, I think this could be a huge season for them.

Re: The Big Issue, Jul 2008: Best summer transfer?

I think it'll be interesting to see how Amauri does at Juventus, having been leading the line very well at the relatively small Palermo. Maybe it will even finally put him on the radar of the Brazilian and Italian national teams, both of which he is eligible for.
I am looking forward to seeing how Modric and dos Santos fare at Spurs, although I agree with a previous post in that having top creative midfielders is all very well, but it does appear that they will need to invest in a couple of new strikers if they are going to try and break into the top four again.
Speaking of Spurs strikers, does anyone else think that the reported £20m asking price for Robbie Keane seems a little high? Yes he's a good striker, but I personally think he's worth £5m-£6m less. Similarly, I don't agree with Martin O'Neill's valuation of Gareth Barry, especially now that is seems impossible for the midfielder to play for Villa again, judging by the reception he apparently got in a friendly against Walsall.
On the subject of Deco, I think he'll struggle in the Premier League. My opinion of him improved a little after some of his performances for Portugal in the Euros, especially against the Czechs, but I still don't think that he'll be able to adapt to the physical nature of English football.

Look no further than Sulley Muntari signing from Portsmouth to Internazionale. A great piece of business by Harry Redknapp, again showing his wheeler-dealer, wide-boy qualities by making a good profit on the man. Jose Mourinho gets a midfielder who is just about to hit the prime of his career; Inter get a player who will give the Inter midfield some much-needed youth and zip, as well as a player who has already shown he can perform perfectly well in Serie A whilst at Udinese.

Similar will be said about the certain switch of Andrew Johnson to Fulham in terms of making a profit on the deal. This once again shows how a rarely praised manager in David Moyes, continues to boost the clubs coffers. The Johnson deal however will not be such a wise move for the club if they cannot find a replacement. Joao Moutinho will be a great coup for the club if the Portugese arrives at Goodison although he comes at a hefty price, much in the same way as Robbie Keane's move to Anfield.

Roy Keane looks to be doing some good business at Sunderland. Tainio, Chimbonda and Diouf will all add quality Likewise Fulham, Zamora could prove a bargain at £5m imo. If he gets regular football expect goals to follow.

Re: The Big Issue, Jul 2008: Best summer transfer?

I think we're going to see a few more big moves before the deadline this year. There have been so many rumours about top strikers in Europe, including Adebayor, Eto'o, Drogba, Benzema, Huntelaar, Villa and Berbatov. Are ALL these players really going to stay at their clubs? Highly unlikely I think. Will Shevchenko risk another wasted season? Does Drogba now want to stay at Chelsea? If just one of these players moves to a top club, it really could spark a transfer merry-go-round. Man Utd will almost certainly buy a striker. The long drawn out affairs do tend to finally conclude by the deadline, or just after it in the case of Ashley Cole, and I'm sure the Gareth Barry saga will end with him at Liverpool despite the money they have spent on Keane (a good signing and partner for Torres, albeit a high price for a 28 year old).
Chelsea will no doubt have spent big on someone by then as Scolari looks to make his mark, but I wouldn't be surprised if he "made do" with his squad until January to give many of them a good chance to show what they can do. Players like Joe Cole, Solomon Kalou and Shaun Wright-Phillips will either play very well or be replaced. David Villa will no doubt go to Madrid, and be a very good signing for a fraction of the touted Ronaldo price. To think of spending 70m plus on one player is utterly ridiculous and really makes you wonder what they'd have to achieve to be dubbed "signing of the summer" at that price. Well, sadly, the merchandising probably makes them good signings to start with. After that, anything less than playing nearly every game and scoring 30 goals would be a disaster.
The knock-on effect of such high prices for the top players is inflated prices for very average players. Andy Johnson could be 13m when Deco was just 8m. Sunderland are happy to pay over 20m for a group of Spurs rejects. Don't get me wrong, I think Malbranque is quite a good player, but these aren't top players and clubs are stretching their finances to get them. As a Southampton fan, I see clubs like Sunderland, Bolton, Fulham and Wigan spending vast amounts on players that aren't likely to bring great success, and more importantly perhaps, aren't likely to increase their transfer values. Is their any point spending 2-3m on a player now in the Premiership? Or is it time to just let your youth players have a go? If they only have to be average to be a 4m player then it has to be a good strategy. At Southampton, largely due to necessity, but I don't consider it a bad choice, we've chosen to focus on the younger players, integrate the youth, reserve and first team squad and try to build for the long term with sustainable finances. Will it work, who knows. But honestly, with all the ridiculous transfers going on now, I'm glad we're trying something different.
Signing of the summer in my opinion will be Mourinho for Inter, who will no doubt be even harder to beat and more of a force in Europe. They were so lacklustre against Liverpool in the Champion's league, but they've made some good signings like Mancini and Muntari. Mancini especially will prove excellent value for money. I can see Hleb excelling at Barcelona too, and again, in today's market, his was a fair price.
In terms of the Premiership, I think Ramos has been most impressive, despite losing Keane, and most likely Berbatov. Modric is a superb and intelligent player and will no doubt quickly adapt to the Premiership. If he can get the best out of Dos Santos then his price tag will seem tiny compared to many others. With David Bentley on the way, they'll have a fantastic array of midfield options. It will be interesting to see the striker replacements he signs though, as it will have to include one of the signings of the summer if they're to achieve anything this season.

After last night's result against Kaunas, I feel my comments about Rangers' buying were correct. seven or eight strikers in the squad, but only one up front -Miller, who works hard but can't score. Meanwhile the complete lack of a creative midfielder in Barry Ferguson's absence cost us dear. We've spent seven or eight million punds this summer on various players, none of whom would get in the Celtic team, and most of whom are not in the positions we needed strengthening! Now without the lure of European football, I can't see us attracting any other decent recruits this summer. Disaster!

Hi all! I have 2pieces of business that, for me at least, were the best pieces of business thus far. Spurs being able to sign a sought-after player like Modric could spell trouble for the rest of the Premier League. The guy is of undoubted quality and he could link up well with Dos Santos, another shrewd buy by Ramos. But the best act this transfer window has seen, or will see, is Sir Alex persuading C.Ronaldo to stay. PERIOD.
