Just wanted to get the general feeling on the appointment of Giovanni Trappatoni as the new manager? Does it reek of following Englands lead or is it a full circle turn to appointment somebody experienced after the Staunton debacle??

After the Republic of Ireland have missed out on a few recent tournements, then i think it's a good move personally.
But there's always the feeling he could turn out like old Berti at Scotland a few years back.
It's a good move, but he's getting on, so they need someone working with him closely to gain his tactical knowledge so they can really move on for years to come.

A bit of both, really. After the catastrophe of the Euro 2008 qualifiers for both nations, both wanted to get the best available. The RoI have finally done this, especially when Trap was up against Terry Venebles for the post! He's a good talker, is our Terry. But how many trophies has he actually won?
Whether Trap can move RoI forwards from the 'hard to beat' mentality remains to be seen. His time as manager of Italy was not a success, but this post may give him the opportunity to restore both his and Ireland's reputation on the world stage.

I personall think it was a good appointment, especially is Liam Brady can have some part time role to play in conjunction with the current role at Arsenal however, should he decide to go down the ultra defensive mentality road he's been down before, I can't see Irish fans being too happy once the honeymoon period is over. Although if qualification is the goal it may be a case of take it any way you can get it. Beggars can be choosers and all that

Which Keane Irish yank Robbie or Roy?? If it's Roy then that's no surprise given that he is one of the most opinionated characters in football if it's Robbie then I can only assume it links back to his Inter Milan days and the Marco Tardelli link.

So the Trapp era has begun, it will be intersting to see what his 1st squad will look like if everybody is fit.
WillStephen ireland will come back on board?
Will McGeady step up to the mark and show his true class for his country?
Can Kevin Doyle return to his form of the season before last?
Can Stephen Reid get a run without injury and finally cement his place as the midfield enforcer?
It may be beyond us hoping to reach South Africe but at least there's hope if they increase the Euro Champ finals to 24 teams!!

Wouldn't totally give up hope about the World Cup yet. There's no doubt that Italy will comfortably win the group, but Bulgaria are no world-beaters, even if they did run Holland and Romania close in the Euro 2008 qualifiers. The biggest danger could in fact be Montenegro, among their players is Vucinic, the Roma striker.

I totally agree about Montenegro, we couldn't have gotten a tougher bottom seed in our group. I feel if all our best players stay fit and we can pick up a few points away from home at the start of the campaign in eastern Europe we have a chance. My main concern is the strength in depth as the recent friendlies have shown that what we have in reserve is not up the the required standard for achieving qualification. We certainally won't be pushovers however I don't think we have the quality across the squad.

Fairly promising start to the campaign, obviously need to improve consistency and concentration to compete at the top of group, but very impressed with Reid and Whelan, must admit hadn't heard of him before August. Looking at the fixtures, notice we've three straight home matches after Wednesday, so could achieve 13 points before the first Italy match.

I agree, it was a decent start and at least we tried to play football for most of the game. Not sure about his substitutions though. Finnan was a very strange choice to make, it disrupted the whole balance of the defence. I thought Kilbane had an excellent game and didn't get the praise he deserved.

You're right, Miller did nothing when he came on, and have never been convinced about McShane. Last few minutes reminded me of the Kerry team's season, hopefully we'll sneak a win Wednesday but won't mind a draw once the form stays good.

Still on course for the playoffs and would have taken a draw before the match,can't help feeling though the win was on if they'd pushed on in the second half. Can't fault the performance, but maybe if Andy Reid have come on for Hunt with twenty minutes to go, better delivery would have given us the breakthrough.

Definitely not complaining, if we pick up three draws and only lose to Italy away, it should be enough, it just puts more pressure on them to beat Bulgaria in Croker.

Still think (if we stay injury free) we can pick up a win in Cyprus, at least a draw in Bulgaria and possibly a draw in Italy and win 3 and draw 2 home matches, dependent on other results it should be enough for a play off place at worst.

You can't read a great deal into friendly matches, especially from highlights, but I don't see the point in starting Gibson, when his only United matches will probably be in the Carling Cup and sub appearances against lesser teams, like the Stoke game. Folan, Long and the Hunts all looked fairly lively, and surely Delap deserves a recall for the Georgia match. Judging by the crowd last night, think we can expect a few Smolareks and Lewandowskis in Irish midfields of 15-20 years time.

I would have expected a few more "Irish" players with non national roots by now Reddevil as we have had a huge amount of immigration into the country since the early-mid 90's. Maybe it's just going to take a bit longer!!
Was quite disappointed with the performance on Wednesday, Doyle and Folan worked hard up front but with very little support from the centre of midfiled they were always fighting alosing battle. I also can't understand why Duff decides to swap onto the right wing when he can't even hit the target from 6 yeard out with his right foot when he gets a chance. McShane is not a right full and looks uncomfortable in that position and Gibson & Whelan in the centre of midfield look lost, perhaps the guidance of Stephen Reid alongside either one of them would not be such a potential disaster. That was a big injury loss to us.
