The 2008-09 Prediction Competition
      #11314 - 09/03/2008 20:51

I am planning in completely finishing off the current Barclays Premier League prediction competition after this season is up. In it's place, i am proposing a new competition that consists of 20 fixtures each weekend/midweek on a more global scale that on occasions will feature club side's from lower league's. When domestic football takes a break for International games, i will then select a chosen 20 meetings to maintain the flow of the competition. This also will take affect on FA Cup weekends and other domestic cup competitions worldwide. My aim is to gain further participants in the competition by catering more to a wider base rather than solely towards the English top-flight.

Following advice from many, i have decided to keep the points system simple by using badgerboy's proposal of 2 points for a home win, 2 points for an away win and 2 points for a draw. I still however feel added bonus points should be awarded for predicting a correct scoreline so i aim to award a bonus 2 points for correctly predicting the scoreline.

Example of how the fixtures may look
10 Jan: Manchester United v Liverpool (12:30)
10 Jan: Celtic v Rangers (12:30)
10 Jan: Reggina v Udinese (14:00)
10 Jan: SV Hamburg v Hertha Berlin (14:30)
10 Jan: PSV Eindhoven v Vitesse Arnheim (15:00)
10 Jan: Aston Villa v Birmingham City (15:00)
10 Jan: Coventry City v Preston North End (15:00)
10 Jan: Celta Vigo v Barcelona (20:00)
10 Jan: Marseille v Toulouse (20:00)
10 Jan: FC Porto v Sporting Lisbon (21:00)
10 Jan: River Plate v Estudientes (23:00)
11 Jan: Sao Paulo v Santos (01:30)
.......... And so forth.

Anyone interested in taking part?

I might well be.

I already take part in a very similar game on another forum (with 10 fixtures a week) though so I guess it might depend what I'm up to come the start of next season & the time I have to devote to it. Not that I spend an awful lot of time considering my predictions at the moment come to think of it. I guess one of the main issues is actually just remembering to post before the games start!

The number of players might be a factor too. The games on here are a bit lacking in that regard.

A major point worth considering with a spread of games from around Europe (or even more so - around the world) is the spread of kick-off times. Friday night kick-offs in the Bundesliga, midnight kick-offs (UK time) in Argentina etc.

A way round this might be to set the same general deadline every week for all predictions to be in - rather than just saying "before the first game kicks off". It might be 7.00 on a Friday evening - or 12.00 Saturday lunchtime - depending on whether you want the option to include Friday games. Any game not played by midnight on the Monday for any reason (postponement or administrative error in producing the fixture list) simply doesn't count.

I do certainly think there should only be one set of predictions per week.

One fun aspect of the games I play on the other forum - & worth considering here if we get a few more players - is having direct opponents each week rather than simply a "total points" league.

So with 20 players - possibly an optimistic total - you could have a prediction league (of 19 or 38 weeks depending on preference) with badgerboy v stephen_woodside, thrall v g_woodside etc - player with most points that week gets 3 pts, 1 pt for a draw etc.

Thanks for your interesting idea's, they are well worth considering. Hopefully, i can attract enough players to make the competition more fun, then finalise the method on how the game can be played. Cheers again for your input mate, much appreciated.

Here are my thoughts from the idea's given to me from badgerboy. If 10 players joined this competition, we could have a 38 week contest based around a league format identical to the ones we are used to seeing day in day out. With 10 players, this would mean that we would each face each other in head to head battles four times during the competition. The scoring system would be 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss in the head to head battles. 2 points for a home, 2 points for an away, 2 points for a draw and an added 2 bonus points for correctly predicting the scoreline should still remain for the individual games with these points affectively representing goal difference for and against. If 20 players joined the competition, obviously each player would go head to head twice through the duration of the tournament.

Any thoughts, queries and any interested in joining, please reply here.

Stephen

I wouldn't worry too much about player-interest just yet.

It's five months before the new season starts. There might be quite a few new forum members by then. Plus some of us could express full commitment to the game now & find better things to do/ less free time / less computer access / some other reason for not joining in come August.

The 2008-09 Prediction Competition is coming soon. I am looking for at least 10 players to join in to enable a league points system as indicated in the rules above. Anyone interested in joining in are most welcome, cheers, ste.

If the prediction competition is still going ahead, and it's not too late to enter, then sign me up. Just curious about how it will operate, do I post the predictions here each week?

The Competition will be going ahead still. Details will be posted here shortly. I had intended to gain enough interest to construct the points system on a league style basis, played, won, drew, lost for instance, it however seems there will not enough players to do so. Further details to follow, in the meantime, can any interested parties show their interest by posting. reddevil82, me and possibly thrall, steve31 and Dottz should take part.

2008-09 Prediction Competition - Rules

As earlier explained, i hoped to have enough participants for a league type scoring system. Has this has not materialised the rules will again be simple. Please read the rules carefully.

Quick Guide to how the game will operate
Each week starting from this coming Saturday 16 August 2008, there will be 20 completely random fixtures to predict from including domestic league's around the world including Domestic and European Cup competitions. Also to be included will be international fixtures particularly when there is a break in the domestic action. This competition will run until Sunday 25 May 2009.

The Points System
For entering ALL 20 predictions for any given week automatically earns you = 5 points
(Failure to enter all 20 predictions means you lose your 5 point bonus entitlement)
Predicting Home Win = 1 point
Predicting Away Win = 1 point
Predicting Draw = 1 point
Predicting correct scoreline = 3 points
Highest number of correct predictions (Home/Away/Draw) = 2 points.
(In the event of a share of correct predictions you will still gain = 2 points each).

When to post your predictions
As this competition includes both league's globally and midweek/weekend fixtures. 20 Random fixtures will be posted here each week on a Monday morning. All 20 Predictions are expected to be posted 1 hour before the stated kick-off time of the first fixture on the list for example, Tue 19 Aug: Bayern Munich v Stuttgart (19:30), meaning that you need to put your predictions in no later than 18:30 on the day of the game. In the event of you not being able to put your predictions in on time, you may still put the remaining predictions that have not played, however you would lose your 5 point bonus but could still gain valuable points so all would not be lost.

Fixtures for this coming week will be posted in due time. Dont forget to post your predictions 1 hour before the first game. All kick-off times are GMT.

******COMPETION ABANDONED DUE TO A LACK OF PARTICIPANTS******

Apologies to steve and Paul for entering but it is with regret that the competition is not worth continuing with such a low number of participants. I will continue to partake take in steve's premier league comp throughout this season, and indeed will be starting a Champions League and seperate UEFA Cup Fantasy league Competition in due course. Hope many will join in for a bit of fun and to add excitment whilst watching the forthcoming games. Watch this space on the Champs/Uefa Cup threads.
