I believe this is longer in terms of how much he had to run. I don't know if this guy had a harder defense, but it was still nice to see him evade them.
In any case, it's evidently ranked 6th by FIFA in terms of best World Cup goals.

Quite simply put, yes this goal scored by Saeed Al Owairan for Saudi Arabia was better than Diego Maradona's goal against England. The sad fact however, and this does sadden me, is that Maradona was renowned as a superstar with a huge reputation whereas Al Owairan was a complete unknown. It appears that times have not changed much after all these years. What may be argued is that Maradona faced a stronger defence in England but in terms of world rankings, Argentina was then and still remain higher ranked. Saudi Arabia on the other hand were seen has major underdogs at World Cup 94 and Owairan's superb solo goal was scored against much higher ranked opponents in Belgium.

Have to disagree. While Owairan ran further albeit 70 yards as opposed to 60, their wasn't a huge amount of defensive resistance. Also, the context was completely different. This was a final group game for both teams and Belgium had already qualified for the next round so were hardly up for the fight. Maradona's was in a quarter final against a much tougher opponent. While Owairan's was indeed a spectacular goal, I think the lesser opposition and importance of the match has to come into play as I'm sure some equally spectacular solo efforts have been put away at non league level against poor opposition, which, removed from that context, could be said to be technically better.

That's actually a good point.
Belgium had already qualified so they could've cared less about winning.

It's a great goal and he had to run a little longer than Maradona, but it's still not as beautiful nor as difficult as the great man's.
Owairan is running into space, on the counter attack; Maradona creates space in front of him where none seems to be. Maradona's run is smooth and rhythmic, he receives the ball facing his own goal with a marker at his back and how he turns towards goal and a mesmerising few seconds later he has rounded the keeper too is just perfection.
Owairan's has its fair share of harebrained defending to taint it somewhat too.
And we haven't even bothered with the drama of the context of the match.

I will never understand how people can compare a nobody stumbling through another bunch of nobodies to a genius at the peak of his career scoring a flawless, elegant goal in a massive game against world class opposition.
