Funnily enough the Dutch are ditching their play-off system from next season.
But I do think it's a decent idea. I'd go for the top three qualifying straight to the Champions League and clubs 4-7 playing off for the final qualifying spot.
In the longer run I'd like to see the Champions League expanded to 64 teams & all the countries with more than one entry (top 15) having the final spot decided via a play-off. Most of these countries would get an extra spot to what they have now (in England teams 5-8 would play-off for a 5th spot) and the extra teams in the groups would negate the need for qualification for most teams. Hence the teams having an "extended season" to fit in play-offs wouldn't have to come back quite so early the following season.
