The Big Issue, June 2008: Euro 2008
      #11932 - 06/06/2008 15:04

'Euro 2008: the winners, losers, flops and biggest surprises'. That's the Big Issue for the month. We'll have to wait until the last ball has been kicked, but I think there's already something to be included into the loser-flop category.

Who will be crowned European Champions of 2008?, Who will be the dark horses and who will fail miserably are all questions we will soon no the answers to. Surely Spain will go close this time around after so many disappointing performances in major tournaments, as to will the obvious nations in Germany, Italy and maybe France. The Czech Republic however may just be the surprise package to go close. Holland are my preference for this tournament, however they have it all to do in what i would say is the "group of death" that also includes France and Italy. If the Dutch were to negotiate there way to the quarter-finals, they would then have a real chance. Turkey, if they get off to a good start, would make one or two sit up and notice as to would Russia and Poland. As for the hosts Switzerland and Austria, i just can not envisage any progress out of the group stages. My tip wont come has no surprise, that being Germany to become Euro Champions, the sole reason being the are the Germans, and you should never underestimate them. All in all, hopefully football will be the winner come 29 June. Enjoy.

Coming soon! The All-Time World Cup at Play4ATeam.com
-The site developed for players BY players!

The failure of all four home nations to qualify for Euro 2008 has led to nostalgic conversations in pubs up and down the land, pining for the days of old when there were players who did the shirt proud.

Surely England would be unstoppable if they still had Lineker up front and Moore at the back? Wouldn’t Scotland have gotten through the qualifiers with Law and Dalglish up front?

But just who would be selected for an England all-time team? Just as importantly, how would they fare against the all-time teams from the rest of the world?

Which is the greatest footballing nation on Earth? Which country has produced the finest talents? Could Baresi and Maldini snuff out Pele and Romario? Who would come out on top between Beckenbauer and Matthaus’ German machine and a Dutch Cruyff-Van Basten dream team?

Well, the time has come to find out once and for all, at the ALL-TIME WORLD CUP at Play4ATeam.com !

From the start I said Holland will win it with there attacking flare. They have showed by topping the group stage with maximun points and a goaldifference of +8. I think Croatia have a good chance as well of winning it. I wasn't suprised that Austria headed out. Also I knew the Czechs wouldn't progress unless they had Rosicky. I have a feeling Germany and Italy will have a bad game and see there way back to their home countries.

I honestly don't know who win it now, I struggle to know how both Holland and Croatia have headed home in the quarters.

The biggest flop is Cristiano Ronaldo.

Going into the event as best player in the world. He was awful scoring only 1 goal.It should affect is campaign for the various awards at the end of season.Like it did with Zidane in 2002.Henry in 2004 and Ronaldinho in 2006 all these went into these tournaments as the best player in the world. But played badly and none of the above 3 won any awards. So it should be the same for Ronaldo.

Mario Gomez.

Has been poor as well missed open goals vs Poland and Austria.I was hoping for more from him.

Look no further than Raymond Domenech for a flop of the tournament. He's always come across as slightly ditzy and a believer of unconventional methods, but Euro 2008 has seen him lose the plot. His team selections were bizarre to say the least.

I hope we have given enough material for the editors to choose from at the Euro 2008 forum. I suppose the new issue is being baked already. Cheers.

There were always the warning signs that if Holland went behind, they would struggle to get back into a match without leaving massive gaps at the back. They don't have any centre backs of the quality of Frank de Boer, Ronald Koeman, Barry hulshoff etc.
Roberto Donadoni must be a contender for the worst flop, for insisting on the paranoid, defensive strategy that has failed Italy so often down the years. Their best performance by a mile was against France, when they actually pushed forward looking for the win, rather than focusing on avoiding defeat.
