Is this writer always so negative? Is there anything about world football which pleases him?

The editing of the article also needs improvement. Luka Modric is from Serbia huh? Well I guess Wayne Rooney is Scottish then!

I'm also always amused how English commentators think anyone who wasn't successful in the English league is therefore a useless player. Jean Alain Boumsong did not do well in either England or Scotland that is true but he's been a solid player since his return to France with Lyon. Raymond Domenech's selection of him hardly was France's problem at Euro 2008 and in fact Boumsong did well when he came on as a sub against Italy. It was he, not Abidal who should have started that match in central defense.

Not all players can adapt to a foreign league and culture. Ian Rush was horrible in Italy, that didn't make him a bad player, just one who couldn't adapt to the league. The same applies with Boumsong and his English adventure.

I agree:

Brian;s history of the World Cup book is excellent, but some of what he writes seems to either be in error, like confusing Croatia and Serbia as being whom Modric plays for or it seems at times, he is writing something just to be a little bit controversial, like his article labelling Ruud's first goal for Holland as offside.

ANd I won't comment on the new article, but again, I think there are questionable parts.

I assumed the Modric thing was just an oversight on his part.

My main complaint his that he has certain obsessions which he assumes the readers share. For example, the Beckham thing got boring about two years ago, but still he feels compelled to share it with us.

Still, he remains one of the few football writers who I bother to make a point of reading. Occasionally predictable, but rarely dull.
