Man. United Transfer Targets
      #12428 - 27/06/2008 14:51

Assuming that Ronaldo goes to Real,United need to buy Messi, as he is the only midfielder playing to a similar standard. In any case, Huntelaar and Lahm would be ideal signings to strengthen the squad.

No chance with Messi. He would not be sold at any price.Lahm will stay at Bayern for one more season and will move the following season.

I agree, United have absolutely no chance of signing Lionel Messi. Just as Real Madrid should have no chance of signing Cristiano Ronaldo. The difference being the Messi is a true pro in the sense of the world. The complete anthesis of Ronaldo, who is the prototype of the modern prima-donna whose cynacism towards his current club damages the game. There is no doubt about Ronaldo's talent, which is immense and unfortunately from an arsenal fan's perspective, his best is yet to come, it is his cynacism toward the game... the play-acting, the posing, the total disrespect for one of the great managers of the game, takes away from his undoubted talent. As for Lahm, I dont think man United need him, although evra is not the greatest player defensively and didnt have a good euro 2008, he has nonetheless made the left back position his own and had many assists last season in united goals. As for Huntelaar, he is still young, he's done ok for the national team when included, but it is still hard to make a true assessment of his abilities to cope with being in the united team when all we have to go on is his strike rate in the dutch league.

Thanks for the comments. I'll admit that Messi will never happen, just threw it out as Van Nistlerooy was never properly replaced, and the same will probably happen with Ronaldo, he'll be sold just before the transfer window closes. A new striker will be needed with Saha's fitness, as will a new defender between Neville's injuries and Brown wanting to leave.

I agree with most that dologhlin has stated regarding Ronaldo and Messi. Ronaldo still has yet to discuss his future at Old Trafford which would worry me if i was a United fan, saying that however, no player is bigger than a club. Unfortunately for the Red Devils, the constant hype over Ronaldo will ultimately lead to him leaving for Real Madrid after his already huge ego has inflated close to bursting point. Messi joining United is not going to happen but Huntelaar is certainly worth taking a chance on even though all we can go on is his strike rate in the dutch eredivise "remember Ruud Van Nistelrooy". Rooney needs a partner up-front, a fellow striker who is big and strong, able to hold the ball up and spread the play. Huntelaar fits that bill and if he is on the market, Sir Alex should be closely monitoring his situation. Saha is not the answer, never has been and never will be, but losing Ronaldo "if it does happen" will not be the end of the world, i mean, lets face it, Cristiano Ronaldo is not "bigger" than Manchester United Football Club".
