Is there anyone else out there who is annoyed that World Cup qualifiers are being played ( again ) this weekend at the expense of club games ( England, Italy, Spain, etc ). Surely they can be played during the week?

They will be played during the week too. There's another batch of international matches on Wednesday.
In this way you can fit two matches in one stop, rather than have the players go back to their clubs and back to their national teams again. It's not too bad, and everyone gets a Wednesday off, which the players need every now and then.

Having one international round of matches on a wednesday in between club matches at the weekend just doesn't work. It means that the national teams only have about 2-3 days to prepare for important qualifying games, and then the players go back to their clubs straight after. At least with international games on a saturday then wednesday the national teams have about 5-6 days to prepare for the first game, which is much better in my opinion. The only time at the moment when there is one round of international matches in midweek is for friendlies, which obviously aren't as important, so i think it should stay that way
