If you're not watching the opening of the MLS, then you are missing some amazing football especially from the "expansion" Seattle Sounders FC. You may know Freddy Ljungberg is now a Sounder, but our other Fredy (with one 'D') is a young Colombian: Fredy Montero. He's hit three goals in the opening two matches: the one against New York was Goal of the Week; his goal against Salt Lake is a runaway leader for Goal of the Week this week. He's a young star on the rise as is his teammate from Cuba - Osvaldo Alonso. Alonso is a Makalele-type midfielder, totally fearless, who is running amok against opponents. I know it's hard for you on that side of the pond to put much into the MLS, especially with Becks bad-mouthing it...although he has no credibility in the States. But Google Sounders FC or go onto YouTube and look for Montero and I think you'll be casting a more curious eye towards MLS.

I've been intrigued by the MLS for a while and it is a shame that it does not get more coverage in the UK. With his $2.5m basic salary I hope his performances are better than they were at West Ham or he will prove to be just off the field publicity for the Sounders. I really hope the MLS goes from strength to strength so that US fans are not subjected to over the hill players looking for a last bumper pay day. There are a number of talented US players (Dempsey, Bradley etc)and it would be great if the MLS can develop to the stage where this caliber of player can select the MLS for football and monetary reasons. As for Beckham I think he has acted with complete disdain for the MLS and the US soccer public. He knew the implications for his England career when he signed an extremely generous contract.
With the World Cup on the horizon who do you think will be the players to watch for the US? I noticed Altidore banged in a hat trick against T & T recently. How good is he?

Definitely watch Landon Donovan. He's going to be be in his prime, and while he'll probably make the 2014 Cup, this is his last chance to show that he can play well in big games. Other than him, Altidore, Dempsey and Adu (who has work to do to get into the first XI), this squad is not something that will shock the world. If we get a difficult group again, we could be in trouble. However, our 2014 pool will probably be our best ever.

Thoughts on Darren Huckerby anyone? Shame he has had to retire, was really impressed with him for the Earthquakes last season. Seems a top bloke as well.
Gutted for him to be honest.
