Who are we thinking are the favourites in South Africa next year? As my username suggests, I'm backing England, but know that they will probably need a lot of luck to go their way if they are to win.
Everyone presuming Spain are the ones to beat?

Brazil, Spain, England, Holland, Germany, Italy, Ghana and Ivory Coast are my predictions for quarter final. Russia, Denmark and US are dark horses. I'm hoping Holland to win. It's refreshing for a new team to win World Cup rather the same group over and over again. It will be better for World Football in general.

There are a lot of teams that will fancy their chances. England's fans certainly have a habit of building team up.
This football blog also points out that they can get carried away in terms of England's world cup chances though.
Personally, I think we have a chance. All we want is a bit of progression and a team to be proud of!
Interesting that you mention Ivory Coast actually, many people are backing them. Must be the Drogba affect!

i honestly think england have a chance. the only thing that needs to be done different this time round from every other major tournament is the media putting so much pressure on them with mentioning 1966. if capello keeps there heads clear and focused and away from the media they can easily win it. right now i only rate spain, brazil above them. holland are good but definitely not up there with spain, brazil and england.

We are one of the form teams. More than anything, we need to maintain this over the next year. It is also important that we don't pick key injures. If Rooney / Gerrard / Terry are ruled out for example, our chances are dramatically reduced.

Just read this this football blog about the upcoming World Cup qualification matches.
Doesn't speak about the World Cup tournament itself, but the remaining qualification matches. It will certainly be interested to see how the already qualified teams play!

Have Argentina got a chance now they have qualified? Will Maradona still be their manager?

So long as Maradooooooooo is in charge, they haven't a hope in hell. Much as he was my favourite player, it was clear he was never going to succeed as manager. To hear him crowing about how he'd confounded his doubters after scraping in at the last minute...shows he's still as nuts as ever.
Regarding England, I just can't shake that feeling that we're not as good as we think we are. We seem to be great when we're up for it, but I worry we still seem to crumble at the first sign of something not going well...the perennial overexcited toddler!

Lots of teams who've won the World Cup have been poor in qualifying, but I doubt Maradona has the personality to get the best out of Argentina. England have too many problems with Ferdinand and James to be real challengers, so at the moment I'd narrow it down to Spain, Italy and Brazil, with the South Americans favourite purely because it's on outside Europe.

The location could make a huge difference to things for England, Spain etc. As for Ferdinand, I don't think he is a concern. I'd rather he had his dip in form now!

I admire your confidence in the English side but I suspect that hype will once again scupper the team. Undoubtedly Capello is a huge improvement on Sven and McClaren but I doubt winning the competition may prove to be even beyond his powers. This leads me to my main gripe about the world cup, it is rigged. Witness UEFA's craven capitulation in seeding the play offs for qualification. I read the organiser of the competition in South Africa saying that Ronaldo's absence would be a 'disaster' for the competition. Who would back Bosnia Herzegovina to beat Portugal. Seems to me this is a done deal. We should not be surprised at this .Every world cup throws up at least some nefarious deeds.
