Is David Beckham overated due to his profile.
      #14970 - 11/01/2010 15:33

In my opinion David Beckham is a good player, but not as amazing as everyone seams to think he is. To me his reputation on the field has been greatly enhanced by his off the field reputation.

There is no doubting his ability to deliver a cross or long range ball, and to take a free kick. But for me there are players who have similar attributes in those departments plus alot more.

I believe Beckham gets hype due to his high profile, Real Madrid I beleive purchased him more for his comercial value and profile than his ability. It wasn't his ability that got him his profile or his endorsments. It was his celebrity marridge and lifestyle, this got him to be a very marketable 'brand' and and made him a super star. Players like Zidane, Gerrard, Henry have done adverts and endorsements maybe but it was their talents on the pitch that primarily made them high profile.

I admire Beckham's charity work and he seems a good egg, but both his footballing ability and his looks are over-rated. Real Madrid had a superior free-kick taker (Roberto Carlos) and arguably a more handsome man (Iker Casillas) when they bought Beckham, whom I totally agree with you about.

"Brand Beckham" is really a modern-day version of Kevin Keegan's self-hype when I was a kid.
