Quote:

The one player i think many clubs including ourselves have let slip, has been Roque Santa Cruz who Blackburn have snapped up. Only time will tell whether the Paraguan will be a hit in the English Premiership, but i feel he has all the attributes as a centre forward to cope in this league.

Totally agree that Blackburn have got a good deal on Santa Cruz. With a forward line of McCarthy, Santa Cruz, Derbyshire, Nonda, Rigters and Roberts, Blackburn are well covered in the attacking department now. With Steven Reid and Robbie Savage back from injury as well, I fancy Blackburn to be serious top 6 contenders this season.

Perhaps Santa Cruz' injury record scared other buyers off? Certainly talent wise he is clearly good enough for a top 6 team.

quality match report!i watched it on setanta!if it had been cheaper i may have gone but with bus/train fares and food/drinks it was cheaper to stay in.on the attendance i went to the real sociedad pre season game a couple of years ago on a saturday afternoon and there was only 10000.when you look at it if there were a load of new signings to see i would have gone but there isnt.did you hear the crowd singing sack the board?when everton went 1-0 down.as for beattie moyes must have kept him on the bench so he didnt get injured and to make sure he goes!i feel sorry for sheff u fans they have it hard and it might get worse.bryan robson hasnt got a clue!

I dont personally blame those who did not attend the game last night, as you said there was only one new arrival in Phil Jagielka on show and he was on the bench. Also, as you mentioned, it was screened live on Setanta 1. Why on earth the fans are chanting "sack the board" as soon as we go a goal down. That chanting should be occuring even if we were winning 3-0 as Kenwright and co are doing what Peter Johnson attempted to do and ruin this great club.

As for Beattie, i am sad in many ways he is departing as the lad can play football but unfortunately he has to go. For whatever reason, the ex Southampton man has failed to live up to his £6 million price tag and i wish him all the luck in the world should he join Sheffield United. I am sure the problems Beattie had during his time at Goodison was down to the fact that he was Southampton's most valuable asset. He then joined the blues and all of a sudden he did not hold that title, and i dont believe he has ever come to terms with being second best if that.

FOOTNOTE: Van Der Meyde and Da Silva both entered the field of play after 72 minutes last night against Werder Bremen, not as i first stated.

Sam Chedgzoy was the man directly responsible for a major change in the game's laws. An intelligent man who was never scared to challenge authority, he discovered a glaring loophole in the laws and proceeded to exploit it during a match at White Hart Lane in 1924.

A new rule had been introduced so that a goal could be scored direct from a corner. Chedgzoy took a corner by dribbling along the by-line as members of both sides looked on in astonishment. They saw Chedgzoy hammer the ball into the net and score a goal that led to a rule change. Twelve months later football's embarrassed hierarchy introduced a rule whereby the taker of the corner could only play the ball once before a second player had to touch it.

Chedgzoy was born in Ellesmere Port in 1890 and initially played for Burnell's Ironworks alongside Joe Mercer's father. His lengthy career as an industrious outside-right saw him win a League Championship medal in 1914-15. On retirement, he went to Canada where he died in Montreal on 7 January 1967. He made eight appearances between 1920 and 1925 and he had a son, also called Sam, who also joined Everton but failed to make a single appearance for the blues.

I certainly am Michael mate. On the 100 Great Everton Players, as you may of noticed, Sam Chedgzoy is number 100 and that number will reach 1 so only 99 left then . Also there will be details of the greatest ever matches in Everton's history amongst one or two other topics i will not announce yet.

I know you are not personally attached to the club but as your username states, you are clearly interested in Football's History. Despite many believing Everton have not much history, i can state that my beloved club holds many records that no other club side in the world can never attain. I intend to put my club firmly back on the map with a wealth of information. Far too much attention these days is paid on the so-called " Big Four" in this country when there is so many historical teams out there that dont get a mention or none of the fans care not to express their passions about there clubs. Many also tell you to stop living in the past but simply put, there would be no future if a past did not exist so we should all embrace the clubs we follow and be proud of them even despite all the complaints we make season in, season out.

I thank you for taking an interest and for your inquiry whether there will be more series like this, much appreciated and i hope i dont dissapoint you.

KEIOC has released a few snaps of a proposed new stadium that they claim can be built on the existing Goodison site, and house 57,000 fans, hotels and apartments. Interestingly they also claim that the capacity during construction would not drop below 40,000, which if true could be a huge vote winner to keep Everton at Goodison Park.

Not much financial detail is forthcoming, but if you pop down to St. Georges Hall on Friday 3rd August, all will be revealed with the opening of a Public Consultation for the day.

KEIOC Spokesman Dave Kelly says: “We have spent a lot of time and effort producing these images.

We believe there are alternatives to Kirkby out there, whether it is redeveloping Goodison or relocating to another site within the city, and we want Evertonians to see them before casting a vote. This campaign is not ruled by our hearts, it is ruled by our heads. We firmly believe we should not betray 115 years of heritage by going to Kirkby."

PLAN B????

Looks better than the plans in Kirkby's "Lar Lar Land" but they must be able to still accomodate St Luke the Evangelist church on the corner of Goodison Road/Gwladys Street. I am not a religious person but that church holds many memories for me, more so on Saturday afternoons rather than Sunday mornings i have to state .

I'll look forward to the other 99. In the meantime you'll probably be able to refresh my memory regarding Everton's founding. I vaguely remember reading somewhere that there was a connection with the temperance movement, which was very powerful in Victorian Britain. Or was that Liverpool?

that would get my vote!but i cant see how the capacity could be 40000 under construction unless they take all the roof off?and i guess the designers have thought about the church,i think there is enough space around there.if all evertonians see this design they will like me get very excited and then think to themselves when?if?etc..we cant even afford leighton baines!!!were would the stadium money come from?

Referee: Mr P.Crossley.

Attendance: 10,010.

Everton's final pre-season friendly of the summer has ended in a draw.

The Blues were held 0-0 by Crystal Palace in sunny south London.

Ex-Palace man Andrew Johnson was afforded a rapturous ovation when he lead out the Everton side, with both sets of supporters chanting the striker's name.

James Scowcroft burst clear of the Blues' defence inside two minutes but Tim Howard timed his dive well to avert the danger.

Clinton Morrison had a couple of efforts off target for the home side, before Phil Jagielka was millimetres away from opening his Everton account when a volley from Arteta's free kick cannoned off the underside of the Palace crossbar in the 20th minute.

Arteta had a penalty claim turned down a few minutes later and then Everton hit the bar again.

This time it was Victor Anichebe who was the unlucky man as he turned Tony Hibbert's cross against the woodwork.

Next it was the turn of Johnson to go close as he nodded Arteta's centre over from six yards out before the Spaniard curled a cheeky free kick into the side netting moments before the break.

Everton made two changes at half time, introducing Bjarni Vidarsson and Nuno Valente in place of Arteta and Hibbert, with Jagielka switching to right back and the Portuese occupying the left side of midfield.

Alan Stubbs fired a free kick over the bar early in the second period and then a Lee Carsley volley forced a fumble from Palace sub keeper Scott Flinders who was able to mop up the error at the second attempt.

The pace of the game slowed as time went on, with a Joseph Yobo header the closest thing to a decent chance.

AJ was afforded another round of applause when he was replaced by Lukas Jutkiewicz but he couldn't help the Toffees find the back of the net.

You was not dreaming, apparentlty it is a done deal if reports are to believed, with the Argentine and Leighton Baines signing for the club in the next 48 hours taking David Moyes summer spending to £20 million. I will only believe this speculation when it happens however on the Luis Gonzalez transfer but i am sure Baines will join the club.

A native of Blackburn, Edgar Chadwick was one of the great names of football in the 1890s. His first senior club was Blackburn Olympic and he had one season with Blackburn Rovers before signing for Everton in the summer of 1888, in time for the football's inaugural season.

An inside-left of enormous talent, he was quick and cunning and he passed the ball accurately and shot hard and often. His left wing partnership with Alf Milward was probably the best in the League, with both men able to read each others game with uncanny accuracy.

Chadwick was a lightweight - he stood 5ft 6ins and weighed 10st 7lbs - but that never stopped him from being in the thick of the action. He won seven England caps, scoring after 30 seconds against Scotland in 1892.

He won a League Championship medal with Everton, and a Southern League Championship medal with Southampton, but played on the losing side in three FA Cup Finals (with Everton in 1893 and 1897, and Southampton in 1902). He played for the Football League against the Scottish League and the Football Alliance and was reputed to be the first Englishman to coach abroad when he worked with Holland an Germany before persuing his trade as a baker in Blackburn.

His cousin, Arthur Chadwick, lived in the shadows at Goodison and managed only five games in five years before moving to Portsmouth where his career finally blossomed and he was capped for England. Edgar Chadwick died in Blackburn on 14 February 1942, aged 73.

Just a quick footnote on Leighton Baines. Despite the press stating that he is joining his boyhood club is false as he is a red hot Liverpool fan who hails from Kirkby. His mother is a Blue and his father is a Red. Once Baines pulls on the Royal Blue jersey of Everton for the first time, he will soon be converted and in turn will convert his young lad into a Blue.

Baines appears to have completed a deal with Everton and the talk on the streets is Luis Gonzalez is ours in a £12 million transfer deal. The latest we here is that Moyes is also looking at bringing in Santi Ezgeurro from Barcelona on a free. We wait, watching sky sports news with bated breadth.

Is Luis Gonzalez proposed move to Everton a publicity stunt??, as mentioned in local press. If not, check out "Lucho's" compilation as he is named, then ask yourself a number of questions. Is he better than Beattie? Can he partner AJ upfront? Are you excited at the prospect of his possible arrival? Click this link and make up your own mind up but all my answers are replied with a "MASSIVE YES". Luis "LUCHO" Gonzalez Compilation.

I'm sorry? Luís González of the Argentine national team? The best player in the Portugese league last season? The man who was made captain of a double European Cup-winning club last summer, just 12 months after his arrival there?

The Luís González who Porto have recently turned down ENORMOUS transfer bids from Valencia and Real Madrid for? Going to Everton?

Yes, Stephen, it's a publicity stunt.

And for the record, even asking 'Is he better than Beattie?' is insulting him, although it's worth bearing in mind he's mainly a left-sided midfielder.

In not one breadth did i think this transfer rumour was true, and i was being slightly sacarstic in his comparisons to Beattie, or did no one catch on, on this forum, probably not . This was more in hope than excpectation of this move going ahead but i am inteligent and experienced enough to keep a level head. Did you know that Everton was supposedly on the brink of signing Hugo Sanchez in his prime, i knew then all those years ago that it was a load of garbage, even in my more naive days. It would be a kick in the crown jewells however if it was to happen, especially to those again to be-little a club side once more, this time Everton.
