Barclays Premier League

Saturday 11 August 2007
Everton 2 --- Wigan Athletic 1 (Goodison Park)
Osman 25 -- Sibierski 79.
Anichebe 74.

Referee: Mark Clattenburg (Tyne & Wear).
Bookings: None.

Attendance: 39,220.

Everton: Howard, Hibbert, Yobo, Stubbs, Lescott, Osman (Pienaar 73), Carsley, Neville, Arteta, Johnson, Anichebe. Substitutes Unused: Ruddy, Valente, Van der Meyde, Jagielka.

Wigan Athletic: Kirkland, Melchiot, Bramble, Granqvist, Kilbane, Valencia, Scharner, Landzaat, Koumas, Heskey, Folan (Sibierski 65). Substitutes Unused: Pollitt, Hall, Aghahowa, Skoko.

For the second consecutive season, Everton have won their opening day game - this time overcoming Wigan at Goodison.
The Blues' 2-1 success was fully deserved - although a late goal from Antoine Sibierski that owed a great deal to sloppy defending from the home side ensured nerves were a little frayed in the closing stages.

And that was not deserved, as the home side had been the stronger throughout, fully deserving the lead Leon Osman and Victor Anichebe gave them.

The goals came in each half - and but for some questionable decisions and brave defending from the visitors there could have been more.
As it is, the Toffees travel to Tottenham on Tuesday buoyed by their first victory of what is a hugely anticipated campaign.

The home side set their stall out from the kick-off, looking the brighter of the two sides. But they struggled to threaten the Wigan goal in the opening quarter of the contest.
It was German Paul Scharner who forced the first save from either keeper, Tim Howard made to work courtesy of a wicked deflection off Lee Carsley's attempted block.

At the other end, Chris Kirkland was untroubled until the 26th minute - when he had to stroll back into his net to pick the ball out of it!
Osman's goal was an audacious, dipping header from 12 yards following a teasing early cross from the right by Tony Hibbert.

The Blues should have been presented with the opportunity to double their advantage just minutes later when Mikel Arteta was blatantly felled in the Wigan penalty area by former Newcastle man Titus Bramble.

But referee Mark Clattenberg, who was perfectly placed, unbelievably waved away the claim.

Fans and players alike were dumbfounded - but both responded in the best way. The volume from the fans was turned up as the Blues slipped up a gear in search of another goal.

Arteta curled a free-kick narrowly wide of the target and Kirkland was forced into a good stop when Andrew Johnson unleashed a well struck half-volley from the left edge of the box.
Even Joleon Lescott got in on the act - with a dizzying 30 yards run taking him to the edge of the Wigan box only for the defender to run out of gas as he was poised to shoot.

Wigan's response was a solitary effort from distance from Emile Heskey that flashed wide of the target.

In the second period Everton had further chances to extend their lead - the best of which came shortly before the hour mark when an Arteta free-kick was fumbled by Kirkland. Osman was denied his second of the game from point-blank range by a brave Granqvist block.

At the other end, Antonio Valencia drilled a low effort wide and Koumas caused problems but the Blues remained the more impressive outfit.
With 16 minutes left on the clock, Osman was withdrawn and replaced by new arrival Steven Pienaar.
Within seconds of being on the pitch he helped start a move that ended with Johnson teeing up Victor Anichebe for his first goal of the campaign - putting the home side within touching distance of their first three point haul of the campaign.

Wigan had other ideas, capitalising on some poor Everton defending to net with 10 minutes of the game left through sub Antoine Sibierski. David Moyes was far from a happy man on the touchline.

Howard was forced into a spectacular save to deny Scharner from distance as Wigan suddenly found new energy.
Johnson could have got his name on the scoresheet in the closing seconds, but it didn't matter. Everton had secured the victory they wanted as they started the 2007/08 season as they intend to continue.

You are correct, the match report is from Evertonfc.com, and is far more biased than my own match reports, and less accurate than my knowledge it seems .

Alex Young was one of the most talked-about players of his generation. His instinctive, flowing style combined with the on-field arrogance of a great performer to make him sporting hero on Merseyside. The adulation which rolled down from the Goodison terraces when he touched the ball verged on un-ashamed hero-worship. In the eyes of a public which searched desperately for a focal point for their affection, the young Scotsman could do no wrong.

In many respects he was an infuriating player, capable of seemingly impossible feats one minute, unable or unwilling to complete a far simpler task the next. Critics said that he 'disappeared' for lengthy periods when the going got tough. Certainly he was not built for a fight. He was a graceful, compact player who could turn a match with one flick of a spidery leg.

He was so revered that he inspired a television play centred around Everton and entitled The Golden Vision, the nickname Young carries to this day. He arrived at Goodison in November 1960, along with Hearts colleague George Thompson. Within two years of establishing his place, he helped Everton to the Championship with a series of stunning solo displays. He played in the 1966 FA Cup-winning side, leaving Goodison in 1968 to become player-manager of Irish League club Glentoran. He stayed only a matter of weeks. He joined Stockport County but was forced to retire in August 1969 because of a knee injury.

Manuel Fernandes move back on

Everton have had a £6 million bid accepted by Benfica for midfielder Manuel Fernandes. What is slowing the deal down however, is that the club want own the Portugese star outright and avoid third party ownership that marred the "Tevez affair".

The Everton Story (Part 3)

The 1881-82 season opened in quite disastrous fashion, Bolton Wanderers burying Everton under an avalanche of class and style to win 13-1. Yet fortunes improved quickly and by the end of that season Everton had won 15 of their 22 matches. There were big wins over Burscough (8-0) and Halliwell (6-0), and on the 22 October, a hat-trick from W.Gibson and two goals from McGill earned 'the moonlight Dribblers', as they had become known, a 5-0 win a Lancashire Cup. Everton went out 3-1 at Turton in the next round, but by the end of the season one local newspaper declared them 'the premier Association club in South-West Lancashire'.

But financial problems were an inescapable fact. In March 1882, at a meeting at John Houlding's Sandon Hotel, Everton officials agreed that they had to find a private ground where they could charge for admission. At some of the more important matches at Stanley Park, attendances of 2,000 were not uncommon; there had to be some way of tapping this interest. After much discussion it was decided to accept the offer of a Mr J.Cruitt of Coney Green, who offered the club use of a field off Priory Road.

The 1882-83 season was Everton's fourth and last at Stanley Park. They reached the semi-final of the Liverpool Cup before losing 3-1 to Bootle who went on to become the first winners. At Priory Road, Everton built primitive dressing-rooms and a sort of stand for officials, but the opening game, between Liverpool & District and Walsall & District, did not live up to expectations. Only 14 shillings (70p) was taken at the gate and officials set about raising money by other means. Some £20 was raised by a concert given by Sam Crosbie's Teachers' Choral Society at the Hand-in-Hand Club, Foley Street.

On the field, Everton's fortunes soared and in 1883-84, they won their first-ever trophy - the Liverpool Cup. They beat Bootle 5-2 in the semi-final, then won a dramatic Final, again at Bootle, when they emerged 1-0 victors over Earlestown. On 29 March 1884 their new president, John Houlding, already known as 'King John of Everton', held the cup aloft. But Everton's joy was shortlived and within weeks they were homeless. Mr Cruitt, tired of the club's vociferous and often over-exuberant supporters, withdrew his support and told them to find another ground. They did, moving to a field in Anfield Road, a site which was to become one of the most famous football grounds in the world. (to be continued)

Tim Cahill, James Vaughan, James McFadden are still out, and new signing Leighton Baines 'who is now in full training but is short of match fitness' wont be risked and is likely to make his debut at the weekend. Andy Johnson will make his 300th Career Appearance tonight in David Moyes' 201st game in charge of the Goodison outfit.

Barclays Premier League

Tuesday 14 August 2007
Tottenham Hotspur 1 --- Everton 3 (White Hart Lane)
Gardner 25 ----------------- Lescott 2.
-------------------------------- Osman 36.
-------------------------------- Stubbs 45.

Referee: Mark Halsey (Lancashire).
Bookings: Malbranque 11, Jenas 57.

Attendance: 37,716.

Everton: Howard, Hibbert, Yobo, Stubbs, Lescott, Osman , Carsley, Neville, Arteta, Johnson, Anichebe (Jagielka 79). Substitutes Unused: Ruddy, Valente, Pienaar, McFadden.

Tottenham Hotspur: Robinson, Chimbonda, Kaboul (Rocha 17), Gardner, Stalteri (Routledge 66), Zokora, Jenas, Malbranque, Keane, Berbatov, Bent (Defoe 60). Substitutes Unused: Cerny, Huddlestone.

Well, well, well, you wait an hour for a London bus then two turn up at once. Everton until last season had not won at White Hart Lane since Gary Lineker scored the only goal of the game on 26 August 1985. Now the toffees have recorded two straight victories there in successive seasons.

Only two minutes in Jolean Lescott beat Anthony Gardner to head home Mikel Arteta's right wing cross from the edge of the six yard box. On 6 minutes, Darren Bent had the ball in Everton's net but Berbatov was correctly flagged for offside after Robbie Keane delayed too long on his through ball. Berbatov again was put in behind the Blues defence on 9 minutes, the provider again being Keane and the Bulgarians square pass should have been dealt with, but both Hibbert and Yobo got in a mix up, resulting in the Nigerian, who seemed to be carrying an injury, denied Berbatov blocking a shot from point blank range.

Mark Halsey produced the first yellow card of the evening for a daft challenge on Arteta from behind on 11 minutes. A minute later, Arteta looked to expose Paul Robinson's left hand post but drilled a right-footed free-kick high, wide and not so handsome from 25 yards. Victor Anichebe superbly killed Andy Johnson's pass instantly, only to fire powerfully straight into Robinson's midrift who claimed the ball at the second attempt.

Martin Jol was forced into making an early change on 18 minutes replacing Rocha with Kaboul. Zakora flashed a hopeful 30 yarder well over the top then two minutes later at the opposite end, little Leon Osman beat the much taller Pascal Chimbonda to loop a header over the bar. Berbatov blasted over whilst well placed on 22 following a great piece of skill by Keane who beat Hibbert by lifting the ball over his head close to the by-line.

Tottenham started to dominate and on 26 minutes, Anthony Gardner escaped his marker, Lescott, to head the home side level for a deserved equaliser from six yards out. The game then entered a lull spell and a sloppy period of play, more so by Everton. Malbranque sprayed a fantastic cross-field ball on 34 aimed for Bent in the penalty area but the ball zipped off the wet surface and went harmlessly out of play. Leon Osman then thumped the Blues into a slightly undeserved 2-1 lead after Arteta's beautiful flighted cross was headed away from Gardner who was under real pressure from Anichebe, the ball fell into the path of Osman who chested the ball down before lashing home expertly with his weaker left foot to score in his 100th start for the club netting his second goal of the season.

Everton then grew in confidence and began to knock the ball around has Spurs had done in the opening 35 minutes and Arteta curled a free-kick narrowly wide of Robinson's left hand angle. In injury time, the Blues silenced White Hart Lane as Alan Stubbs fired in a pile driver of a free-kick that took a huge deflection off Chimbonda and beyond a stranded goalkeeper. The dubious goal panel can surely not take the goal off Stubbs as the initial strike was on target.

The second half began with Keane shooting at Howard in the opening minute of the restart that Howard smothered safely. Then on 47 minutes, Spurs almost pulled an immediate goal back, with a superb Berbatov header that beat Howard all ends up but cannoned off the upright. Everton broke straight away as Johnson picked up Osman's pass, then teased Spurs defence and shot narrowly wide via a slight deflection. Jenas was booked on 57 minutes for a foul on Arteta as Referee Mark Halsey started to get a little whistle happy. Keane whipped a freekick 6 yards wide (60) and a minute later, Defoe replaced Bent. Jermaine Defoe then teased Hibbert but his cross shot was smothered by Tim Howard.

Wayne Routledge replaced Stalteri on the 66 minute mark as Spurs then had a spell of possesion followed by a hopeful 67th minute Defoe strike that was the worst attempt of the evening. Johnson latched onto a fortunate ricochet on 73 shooting right footed that Robinson saved at full stretch. 13 minutes from time, Tim Howard superbly denied Defoe from a Chimbonda cross maintaining Everton's two goal advantage. Phil Jagielka entered the play on 79 minutes to make his Everton debut, replacing Anichebe who had worked his socks off.

Johnson (88) then forced Robinson into another good save then captain Phil Neville attempted a left footed shot that drifted wide of the England goalkeepers goal. Tottenham won seven pre-season games out of seven, whereas Everton had an indifferent Pre-season. Just shows you how much friendlies mean in terms of confidence building. The toffees can hold early bragging rights as they are top of the table. We know it wont last, but still, it is a pleasant feeling while it does last.

Woody's Man of the Match: The whole team worked tirelessly with Alan Stubbs being a rock at the back. Unsung hero Lee Carsley also had a fine game with a series of crucial blocks and protected the back-line superbly, but my vote once again goes to Mikel Arteta whom i can not believe this lad cant make the Spanish national team. On this form, Arteta is as good as anyone in his position, comfortable on the ball, dangerous on dead ball situations and as all the skill in the world.

Great performance last night, if Moyes can add Fernandez and possibly another experienced striker, then i think top 6 is within us, possibly top four if we are in touching distnace come December.

I agree and with Mido set to join Middlesbrough, that may possibly pave the way for the blues to sign Yakubu. I am not saying he is my prefered transfer target, but he certainly is an experienced striker. Fernandez would be a fantastic coup for Everton, this lad really is a special talent. What Moyes men lack in skill and guile, is more than compensated with their terrific work ethic as a whole unit. Saying that, we have one of the most talented players in the Premier League in Mikel Arteta. When the Spaniard is in full flow, he is an absolute joy to watch.

Arteta is certainly Everton's star man and most talented player. Must be in Premier Leagues top 5, simply as he has so much pressure on his shoulders to perform every week, without him, we lack a bit of class.

Only problem is, every club knows this, stop him, you stop Everton, and that seems to be what Steed Malbranque tried yesterday when he tried to cripple him in the first half, yellow card for that challenage, wasn't it more like assault?

As for striker, yeah Yakubu fits the mould, someone with a bit of strength and in my opinion someone who knows English football at this stage, don't bring someone in from abroad who needs time to settle into England as i think we need to push on after this good start now. Nugent would have fitted the bill, but i'm kind of lost for anyne else to fit the mould i have in my head other than, Yakubu or possibly Gudjohnsen or Barca - years loan anyone?

I agree to an extent that we miss a bit of class when Arteta is absent, however, Osman is not short of a touch of skill, so to Steven Pienaar who by all accounts is very skilful and has great vision for a pass. That was evident on saturday when he was only on the pitch for two minutes when he slid Andy Johnson in, who in turn laid Anichebe in for his goal.

Certainly, Arteta is the clubs main architect and it would be a blow if we lost him to injury but the club can and have coped without him in the past. If he does not make the Spanish national side in the not to distant future, heaven only knows why.

Also, Arteta was the most fouled player in the top flight last season, so if he is stoped illegally then fine, we all know how dangerous he can be from a dead ball.

Terrific performance. Best away display I can remember since a win at Villa Park the season we came fourth.

Lots of valuable work put in by the unsung toilers such as Carsley and Neville. Osman had his best game for Everton, Lescott was immense (again), Johnson ran tirelessly, and Arteta provided the artistry.

It's a real shame that we lost Cahill and Vaughan because I think we'd be a threat to any team with a full squad. However, if we can get Fernandes in that would be a major booost.
