Could'nt agree more barney, and it is a great shame Vaughnie and Cahill are long term absentees. The club is making steady progress under Moyes. Last night tipified the mentallity of the Scot, ensuring the team worked hard for each other. This same attitude as to be taken into every game as if it is a cup final.

Everton officials were in the capital last night in an attempt to thrash out a deal to bring Manny Fernandes back to Goodison, permanently. A £6 million bid has been accepted by Benfica to claim 50% of the players playing rights, now Everton are negotiating with Global Sports Investment for the other half Fernandes' playing rights. If they prove successful, we will have bought an exceptional young talent. What has suprised me is, why no one else has gone in for Fernandes.

everton really have a team to be proud of at the moment.last night was a fantastic team performance and i would have to credit mr moyes for building a team gradually over the last couple of years that works for him and for themselves.i dont want to get to carried away but who knows what could happen this season!as for tottenham with all the money spent they seriously need another decent centre back and someone in midfield as gardner and jenas are unbelievably overrated!i just hope everton can carry on were they left off at reading on saturday.we are top of the league!!!!!!!!!

Transfer Talk

Everton are to complete the signing of Manuel Fernandes from Benfica tomorrow. Fernandes arrived this afternoon at Manchester International Airport then travelled to Goodison Park to have a medical. I can report that his medical reports will be in tomorrow, and he will then be unveiled at a press conference in a deal worth around £9 million.

Well, with Manuel Fernandes in the bag, in a reported £8 million plus deal, Everton will almost certainly add Yakubu to their ranks some time next week. Yakubu, who appears not to be suffering any injury, is not included in Middlesbrough's trip to Craven Cottage, Fulham tomorrow afternoon, thus further adding hot speculation that the Nigerian and Middlesbrough forward is set to leave, following Mido's arrival from Tottenham, his destination will be Goodison Park for a fee of around £11 million.

Any chance that Van Der Meyde will actualy make an effort this season Stephen?

Quote:

Big question mate. I am really hoping so but cant see it. When the Dutchman signed for the Blues i was so delighted. What has happened to my moment of elation of his signing to this date i cant explain. He has never looked fit since his arrival at Goodison and has been nicknamed in these neck of the woods as "Shandy" refering to his endless late nights he spends out in Liverpool City Centre. Whether he has been behaving himself of late, well i guess only time will tell and to see him consistantly performing well at Everton, that would be like a new signing for the club. Everyone knows Van Der Meyde has tons of ability, but once again only time will tell how he fares.

Everton's Dutch international Andy van der Meyde has been suspended by the Premier League leaders following a "breach of club discipline".
Midfielder Van der Meyde, 27, failed to appear at training on Sunday, a day after Everton's 2-1 win over Wigan.

"He has been suspended for a week and handed the maximum fine possible," said a statement on their website.

Boss David Moyes added: "Andy has had numerous warnings about this type of thing - we won't tolerate it any more."

Moyes continued: "I will make a decision regarding the player's future next week."

Holland winger Van der Meyde was not involved in the squad for Tuesday's 3-1 win at Tottenham and will not feature in Saturday's trip to Reading.
BBC Sport.

Well, i suppose that answers all. I could only speculate, but my speculation would probably be correct in where "Shandy's" where-abouts was on Saturday night. You guessed it, hiccup, hiccup. in the boozer. What a sheer waste of a terrific talent.

Oh well, we still have terrific talents in James McFadden, Leon Osman, Mikel Arteta, Manuel Fernandes, Andrew Johnson, Tim Cahill, James Vaughan etc, etc, etc, etc, and soon to be Yakubu.

Loop Plans Revealed

Bestway have launched images today of how the proposed new stadium at their Scotland Road site would look. It is to include a tower structure, which would incorporate hotel and leisure facilities, and Bestway are claiming that 50,000 Evertonians could watch our heroes in comfort whilst importantly not leaving the City. For more information on the Bestway proposal, click this link.

Bestway's Head Honcho of Property Malcolm Carter says: "We hope that fans can see that there is a reason for voting to keep Everton in Everton. The size and stature of these two companies shows how serious we are about the project and I know that the City Council shares our determination.

We also remain committed to our existing business, and are continuing to make progress in securing a suitable location for this as part of any deal. When the ballot’s over we want to be in a position to sit down with the club and demonstrate that our site is a viable option.

Cllr Bradley says: "The Loop site is a real possibility – companies with this background would not be involved with it otherwise - and I would hope that Everton would give it serious consideration. They owe it to their fans to consider this option."

Keep Everton in our city, The Peoples Club, The Cities most populated fan base.

Personally, i felt the better team won on the day. Steve Coppell as his side working hard as a unit and had a similar tactic that Everton applied at Tottenham in midweek. Yes, we were unlucky when we twice hit the woodwork in the same attacking move, but we did not throughout the 90 minutes threaten Reading's goalkeeper.

My match report will follow shortly.

Barclays Premier League

Saturday 18 August 2007
Reading 1 --- Everton 0 (Madejski Stadium)
Hunt 43

Referee: Steve Bennett (Kent).
Bookings: Lescott 73, Ingimarsson 74, McFadden 81, Doyle 84.

Attendance: 22,813.

Reading: Hahnermaan, Murty (De la Cruz 34), Ingimarsson, Bikey, Shorey, Ki-Hyeon (Oster 70), Harper, Gunnarsson, Hunt (Convey 78), Doyle, Long. Substitutes Unused: Federici, Fae.

Everton: Howard, Hibbert (McFadden 65), Lescott, Stubbs, Valente, Osman (Jagielka 88), Carsley, Neville, Arteta, Johnson, Anichebe (Pienaar 56). Substitutes Unused: Ruddy, Baines.

Everton’s winning start to the season ended at the Madejski Stadium where Reading won 1-0.

Stephen Hunt’s 44th minute goal settled the match to give the home side their first win of the campaign.

In truth it was a poor contest with little to brighten it although Everton almost nicked a point just before the end when both James McFadden and Andrew Johnson hit the post.

There was plenty of energy but precious little end product for the opening 10 minutes as both sides sized each other up.

Everton nearly scored in the 11th minute when a deep Tony Hibbert centre was cushioned into the path of Andrew Johnson by Mikel Arteta. Johnson’s snapshot was darting towards the top corner when it was diverted away for a corner by Andre Bikey.

Then Kevin Doyle stretched Tim Howard with a low shot that the Everton keeper dived low to save.

Man of the moment, Leon Osman, came into the game with a curling effort that drifted over the bar and then a close-range attempt that was charged down.

Johnson and Anichebe were largely well-shackled in the opening period although the former did find enough space to drill a shot just wide eight minutes before the break.

The only goal came a minute before the half-time whistle. There seemed little danger when a right-wing cross bounced inside the Everton penalty area but Stephen Hunt darted into space and steered a neat finish past Howard.

It was a strangely sluggish Everton in the early period of the second half and David Moyes was forced into a reshuffle when Victor Anichebe limped off to be replaced by Steven Pienaar.

On 67, Mikel Arteta floated a free-kick into the Reading box that was flapped at and missed by Marcus Hahnemann but Andre Mikey was on hand to clear the loose ball away from his own goal-line.

England international Nicky Shorey cracked a well-controlled volley goalwards in the 75th minute but Joleon Lescott stood firm and headed the ball from danger.

When it came back into the Everton box, Alan Stubbs guided it safely back to Howard who was challenged heavily by Ivar Ingimarsson, earning the Icelandic striker a booking.

There was an amazing let-off for Reading in the 85th minute when McFadden’s exquisite chip rebounded off the post with Hahnemann beaten and then Johnson also struck the woodwork with the follow-up effort.

Match Report from Evertonfc.com

Woody's man of the match: Not an easy choice here as many under perfomed. Arteta had a poor game, so to did Nuno Valente. Leon Osman started well and Johnson worked hard throughout without really threatening Reading's goal. McFadden caused the Royals defence problems when he entered the action. My man of the match goes to Jolean Lescott.

Typical of everton to put in a poor performance after such an uplifting one at tottenham!very bad luck with mcfadden hitting the bar(like van de meyde)and johnson hitting the post.will have to be content with an 11 million signing on monday(i hope)and the return of fernandes!we definitely missed yobo!

In total agreement, we did miss Yobo and Nuno Valente was awful at left back. I also was slightly dissapointed in Moyes as he included Leighton Baines on the bench but stated he did not want to risk him. In my opinion, that was a waste of a substitution, when he could have put one of the kids on the bench or de Silva. Yakubu may just be the fox in the box we need, and his partnership with AJ could be fruitful, tall centre forward with strength alongide a quick Johnson. Sign the Yak blues.

looking ahead if everything goes according to plan this week we could have a starting 11 of howard, neville, yobo, lescott, baines, osman, fernandes, carsley, arteta, johnson, yakubu.with a strong bench aswell.ruddy, mcfadden, pienaar, anichebe and either stubbs or hibbert.i dont know why baines was on the bench but i guess nuno valente has seen the writing on the wall and realises he will be second choice left back.its quite good having a player who has played in a world cup semi final in the reserves.

Dixie Dean was arguably the greatest goalscoring machine football has ever known. larger than life, 'Roy of the Rovers' charachter, Dean carved himself a very special niche in Merseyside sporting folklore. A positive giant of a man in both physique and application, Dean was years ahead of his time and, in many respects, the complete footballer. Typifying the robust, single-minded centre-forward of the day, he struck sheer terror into the hearts of defenders who were handed the unenviable task of stopping the man with the no-nonsense, never-say-die attitude. Arguably the most lethal header of a ball in the history of the game. Dean could achieve absolutely anything in the air when provided with the right service. After making his League debut for Tranmere Rovers in January 1924, he notched up 27 goals in 27 games for the Prenton Park club the following season before being lured across the River Mersey to Goodison Park. His scoring feats while wearing the royal blue of Everton are legendary. In his first full season he scored 32 goals in 38 appearances, but the pinnacle of his career was reached in 1927-28 when he logged the unsurpassable total of 60 League goals in only 39 games. A measure of his indomitable spirit was his recovery from a bad road accident in 1926. In June that year he fractured his skull and jaw in a motor-cycle crash, yet on 23 October he returned to score at Leeds and helped Everton to only their second win of the season. He severed his ties with Everton in 1938 when he moved to Notts County where he played only nine games, scoring three goals. He signed for Irish club Sligo Rovers in 1939 and, between January and May, played 11 matches and scored 11 goals, thus maintaining the consistency he applied to goalscoring throughout his illustrious career in whatever standard of football he played. When he was demobbed after the war, Dean took over a pub in Chester called the Dublin Packet. Here he quite litterally hung up his boots, together with his many trophies, and stayed for 15 years. Christened William Ralph, he disliked the nickname "Dixie". He became a popular after-dinner speaker, filling halls and clubs wherever he appeared. Dean who scored 377 goals for Everton in 431 appearances in all competitions and won 16 England caps scoring 16 goals, had his right leg amputated in 1976 after a long illness. It was somewhat fitting that he died at his beloved Goodison Park on 1 March 1980, minutes after the final whistle of an Everton v Liverpool derby match in which the Reds won the game 2-1.

Everton Mangers

#1 Theo Kelly

Theo Kelly was Everton's first-ever manager. He was appointed at the end of the 1938-1939 season, shortly after the club had secured the League title for the fifth time. Everton were one of the last of the big name clubs to appoint a manager. Before Kelly took over the reins, team selection was a matter for senior coaches, prominent board-room executives and specially-appointed committees.

Kelly had been Everton club secretary for many years when it was decided to offer him a newly-created post. A superb organiser with afine business brain, he was not particularly popular with the players, many finding it difficult to communicate with him.

But Harry Catterick, who played under Kelly, said of him: "He was the best public relations man i have ever known and any shortcomings he might have had with the players were compensated by his abilty to open doors that were closed to other people." His first seven years as a manager found him in charge of a team playing in wartime regional football after the Football League had been suspended for the duration of the hostilities. As peacetime football dawned, he angered many of Everton's loyal followers by selling Tommy Lawton to Chelsea in 1945, but in fairness to Kelly it has to be said the the free-scoring centre-forward had been restless for som time.

Joe Mercer, too, found it difficult to play for Kelly and the manager found himself selling another pre-war star to a London club, this time Arsenal. Kelly rarely dipped into the transfer market during his time in charge, firmly believing that a manager should make do with what he has, unless an exceptional talent becomes available. Perhaps it was a philosophy whic arose from the fact that, as a secretary, he had spent so much time studying the adminstrative and financial problems of football.

The one big deal that he did line up turned sour on him. Constantly on the look-out for a forward to fill the gaping void left by Dixie Dean and Lawton, he pinned his hopes on Newcastle United's Albert Stubbins, but Liverpool chairman, Bill McConnell, got in first and even an increased offer of £12,500 was not good enough to bring Stubbins to Goodison Park. In 1948, with Everton hovering just above the relegation zone, Kelly reverted to his old job of secretary when Cliff Britton returned to the club as manager.

Kelly's Managerial Record

League: P 93; W 36; D 17; L 40.
FA Cup: P 9; W 3; D 3; L 3.
Total: P 102; W 39; D 20; L 43.

Everton sign Wessels

Everton have completed their fourth signing of the summer, drafting in experienced German goalkeeper Stefan Wessels.
The 28-year-old keeper arrives at Goodison on a free after leaving FC Cologne. The former Bayern Munich player will provide additional competition for the goalkeeping jersey at Everton. He told evertonfc.com: "I am excited to be here in England. It is the first time I have played for a club outside of Germany but the English Premier League is a very exciting league and I am looking forward to my time here at Everton."

Wessels has signed an initial one-year contract with the Blues. He is the Club's fourth signing of the summer following the acquisition of Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines and fellow former Bundesliga man Steven Pienaar. Wessels has represented Germany at various of levels including under 21.Stefan’s career bagan at Bayern Munich and broke into the first team squad during the 1999/00 season, deputising for German international Oliver Kahn. He made his debut for the Bavarian giants against Glasgow Rangers in the Champions League in 1999 and Wessels was involved in the 2001 Champions League truimph.

However it was proving to be a difficult task to dislodge Kahn from the number one jersey and the 28-year-old joined FC Cologne in 2003 seeking first team football.

i really dont think this one will happen as the board(well keith wyness)has said it isnt viable due to space and safety issues blah!blah!blah!the board have their hearts set on moving to kirkby mainly down to money i think but its up to the fans to say no.i voted no after getting my postal vote and glossy brochure basically saying that everton and everyone involved wants to move and saying how great it would be as there would be more corporate facilities and we could have pop concerts etc..its pretty sad really!everton could have there own prawn sandwich brigade!!!
