I have now taken it upon myself to start my own competition soley involving the English Premiership. Anyone caring to join in, then feel free to do so as every one is more than welcome. How i will start this off is by giving my own predictions on the opening week of the season. I will give my predictions over in a couple of days but in the meantime, can anyone give me feedback if they are willing to enter this comp. To save time in typing out the fixtures i post, it is recommended that participants paste then copy the list of games then enter the predictions. All entries must be in at least 15 minutes before the first game of that given fixture list. I look forward to hearing your responses.
There is also no reason why this type of competition cannot be started on this forum featuring South American League's and indeed any well established League's globally. It is a bit of an interest to pit each others wits against each other, and adds a fun factor to an already serious forum at times. Variety is the spice of life as they say.
Rules and Points system Simply, the rules and points system will be as follows. For a correct prediction of a winner of a single game, say for example for instance Everton to beat Wigan, you will gain 1 point. To predict the correct scoreline, say 3-1 to Everton v Wigan, you will gain an extra two points. Predicting an away win will automatically gain you two points. To predict a draw will earn 3 points, but to predict the actual scoreline of that draw will win you an extra two points as with all correct scoreline predictions.
Matches are listed by the earliest kick off times and earliest date.
Points System in brief Correct prediction for an Home win = 1 point. Correct prediction for an Away win = 2 points. Correct prediction for a Draw = 3 points. Correct scorline prediction = 2 points added extra bonus.
Fixtures and Predictions
Sat Aug 11 - Sunderland v Tottenham Hotspur (12:45) Sat Aug 11 - Bolton Wanderers v Newcastle United (15:00) Sat Aug 11 - Derby County v Portsmouth (15:00) Sat Aug 11 - Everton v Wigan Athletic (15:00) Sat Aug 11 - Middlesbrough v Blackburn Rovers (15:00) Sat Aug 11 - West Ham United v Manchester City (15:00) Sat Aug 11 - Aston Villa v Liverpool (17:15) Sun Aug 12 - Arsenal v Fulham (12:00) Sun Aug 12 - Chelsea v Birmingham City (13:30) Sun Aug 12 - Manchester United v Reading (16:00)

Sorry to be fussy Stephen but terrible scoring system...
Why should predicting a draw be more valuable than predicting a win? And why should predicting that Chelsea might just manage to win at Pride Park be worth three times as much as correctly assessing that Aston Villa will just edge a thriller at Villa Park against Spurs?
And correct scores are to a large extent "luck". If Man U. are tonking someone by three or four for example it's pretty random whether they go & get another one or sit back, relax a bit too much & allow the other team to score.
What's wrong with two points for a correct prediction (whether a home win, draw or away win) & one bonus point for each correct score?

I appreciate your feedback badgerboy but i feel the points system is reasonable. In my defence of giving 3 points for draw is quite simple. On a football coupon, if you had £1 on three homes you would be very lucky to get odds of 9/1, Three aways would be something around 16/1 whereas putting 3 draws on usually bring odds around the 32/1 scale. This is clear evidence that it is more difficult predicting draws than Home's or Away's, so it then begs the question, why not gain more points predicting the draws.
We done a similar points system in my work place a couple of years ago that are quite similar to your idea's and to an extent it worked in the way that there was a monthly prize fund as there was always a couple in with a chance in the final fourth week. However, there would obviously be no prize fund in my competition and with my proposed scoring system, it would give individuals the opportunity to score big weekly scores to establish a healthy lead, then in turn anyone struggling behind the frontrunners would choose predictions more thoroughly to enable them to catch up.

So far, i would like to say a huge thank you to righteous1, RichieC and rotku for entering the competition.
All are welcome to enter the competition even during the season as there is to be player of the month awards, obviously to the player who gains the most points in the given month. This option will allow new forum members to join in.
Just one final note. If for some reason or another, anyone of us can not make predictions at a weekend or midweek, your previous weeks predictions would just follow on in identical sequence so at least we would gain the opportunity to gain the odd point or three or just fluke a massive points total.
Good luck all.

Barclays Premier League Results

Righteous1 is our early leader with a series of fine predictions, most notably with a predicted a 2-2 draw (Derby v Portsmouth) which notched up 5 points alone for Righteous. Rotku and steve31 are hanging on to his coat-tails with a respectable 8 points apiece followed closely behind with 7 points each for Sub and RichieC. Me and Badgerboy will be dissapointed with 6 and 5 points respectively.
Leaderboard
1 - Righteous1, 11 points. 2 - Rotku, 8 points. 2 - Steve31, 8 points. 3 - RichieC, 7 points. 3 - Sub, 7 points. 4 - Stephen, 6 points. 5 - Badgerboy, 5 points.

It's early days yet. For now badgerboy is more disappointed with your maths.
I believe you may have forgotten the vital two points I obtained by correctly predicting the score at Goodison. So my points should be an unspectacular 7 - still better than 5 though....
Edit: I would say you've just forgotten (or abolished?) correct score points entirely - as you haven't given yourself any either. But then I think righteous1 has either 9 pts (no correct score points) or 13 (points for Derby-Portsmouth & A. Villa-Liverpool).
Edit 2 - Badgerboy's "alternative guide" to the scores on the doors:
righteous1 13 Steve31 12 Rotku 10 Richie 9 Stephen 8 badgerboy 7 subhankar mondal 7
I'm off the bottom on alphabetic order!
Seriously though I would suggest people check their own scores as well. I'm just as likely to be wrong as Stephen - well nearly

soz badgerboy, i have your score written down as you gaining 7 points, unfortunately i have somehow posted on the forum that you only have 5. My maths are ok, its my final input that appears to be lacking .
Good idea also mate, that everyone should individualy check their own scores.
Once again, i appologies for my crass error.

You have to expect some early teething problems and lets be fair, i have been in the middle of working out the total's whilst still in work, thankfully, you have volunteered to be our score checker . Cheers for that lad.
Oh and, "cough, cough", with the bonus correct score points, your score increased, an invalid statistic really as mine did too, but i invented the scoring system i cant get right yet. I just want to get home from work tomorrow, clear my head with a few cans of lager and get my sums right, after this total as been added, i should be then topping the leaderboard myself . .

Maybe those cans of lager are not such a good ides Stephen since you seem to have poor Derby playing twice this Wednesday!! I know it's tough for promoted sides to survive in the Premiership but I think this is taking it a bit far

Well the maths is much better this time!
However, until I get bored with the idea I've decided to also keep my own "alternative league table"
2 points for correct prediction + 1 point for correct score.
Current standings:
righteous1 20 steve31 19 rotku 18 stephen woodside 18 badgerboy 14 RichieC 12 subhankar mondal 10 g woodside 5
I'm still working on a system that puts me top

Stephen
I had forgotten that earlier you wrote this:
Quote:

- which you've now contradicted...
The original rule was ludicrous by the way. Just checked & tonight Richie C would have joint top-scored with 8 & Sub scored 6.

I have not really contradicted myself, i just had a long think about it. It is simply unfair that anyone who enters predictions each week should be beaten by those who rarely enter scores. Unless notification is given, stating "can you follow my scores on from the previous week" then that will be acceptable.
Also badgerboy, why you have to look for holes and to keep an alternative scoring system to the original one is beyond me, it is complicated enough without having others further confusing the situation.
If you want to invent a new scoring system, why dont you start a new competition in the Spanish, French or any other league?
These are the Original Standings that will remain!!!

Firstly, welcome to the competition FootballFanatic and congatulations for an outstanding opening score of 13 points. 10 points were gained by correctly predicting two correct score draws. See badgerboy, it pays off to predict difficult draws . Also well done rotku and steve31 for another consistant points tally.

Thank you Stephen. I thought I sucked at this predicting game after saturday's matches but luckly things fared better on Sunday. :-)

I got most of my points from one too. But that doesn't change my mind about the points system being unbalanced. To me it's not any more or less "difficult" to predict a Man City win over Man Utd for example than a Liverpool draw with Chelsea. It means winning the competition can be more about "luck" than "good predictions".
But you're the one that can be bothered running the game every week - I can't even be arsed checking the scores already (except my own) - so this is the last time I'll comment on the subject.
Well maybe "last" is a bit excessive. "Never say never"

Strange you should say that mate, i just sent a private message to him, saying he would be rolling in it if he was a gambling man. Again well done Fanatic.

Doh! I should have been in the gambling business.
But it might adversly affect my enjoyment of the game. I already get too excited without having my daily bread on the line, would become a total nutcase if it were so.

I'll think you'll find I might have scored a massive 8 points this week - rather than 7. 5 pts for Blackburn-Everton & home wins for Arsenal, Villa & Chelsea.

What a lousy score from me this week. My only consolation is that I lost 7 pts in the 90th minute.
Well done to the two Woodsides!

I'm still behind all the players that played every week. I blame the scoring system! Forces me to go for the draw too many times!

Well done to badgerboy for a fantastic 18 points total this weekend who has been in terrific form of late. I just hope you have had a little flutter of late? Sorry for the crappy fireworks display in your honour .FootballFanatic1 also had a profitable weekend with an excellent 16 points finishing just behind badger. Also a great debut score from RSJames who notched up an impressive 15 points along with the ever improving g woodside, well done to all three. I still somehow remain in overall top spot with me and rotku competing in a see-saw battle but many are catching up rapidly as both of us will both admit, are struggling lately. Well done everyone, and keep up the good work. Fellow toffee steve31 also had a disappointing weekend but was player of the week last time around. Our excuse is we have not recovered from Everton's win on Thursday, whats your excuse rotku .

That's a pleasant surprise!
A couple of correct scores I didn't know I had and when I was watching M. of the D. 2 last night (I was out all afternoon) I had a feeling I went for the draw in the Fulham-Pompey game!
Unfortunately no gambling - so no money won. I tend not to bet on individual matches (except the Cup Final for some absolutely ridiculous reason).

October Player of the Month g woodside
Well done to g woodside for your superb weekly total of 19 points earning the player of the month award. Also a briliant weekly total from rotku of 17 points whom still remains in the overall lead at the top of the table. Badgerboy, RSJames and steve31 all had a decent month so well done also to you all, me i am having a terrible spell but things can change quickly in this competition, or at least that's what i am hoping. Thank you all for your continued participation.

Did someone change the scoring system?
I believe I got 12 points this week (up from 11 on my first count!) - not 8. Also Rotku 19, and Steve31 10....

Wow badgerboy, your early with your predictions. You usually leave it until the last few hours before the first game. Good luck with your scores.

The International break may have come at a bad time for my in form team Everton, but this break is good for me. Some of my predictions i have made of late, i looked back at and said, "eh, why on earth did i predict them to beat them?". Time for my sinking ship to re-emerge i think.
Brilliant scoring once again from rotku and badgerboy who both are begining to annoy me "in the nicest possible sense you understand . Infact everyone involved, Steve31, RSJames and g woodside are all having steady, and sometimes excellent weekends. It is the individual who started this competition who is struggling. Well done all.
PS... I hope i have the scoring correct for once, feel free to correct me if i have made any errors.

And I wish I'd stuck to my policy of predicting draws where reasonably likely.
The games at Wigan & Reading were bad misses.

Wow, what an amazing score by rotku, he certainly made up for his omission last week big time. Great score by g woodside also who may have had an early December lead only for rotku’s brilliance. Me, well I am having an awful run of predictions and if anything, I am getting worse rather than better. Cant wait for this weekend, “NOT”.

Please Note: After this weekends Premier League fixtures have been completed, i will be posting all the fixtures for the busy Christmas/New Year period. This is merely for a convenience for anyone who is going to be very busy over this period and have no time to post their scores. Obviously, there is no rush to post your scores as a whole during this period if indeed you have the time post your predictions, but this option is available should it be needed. Thank you for your participation and i wish you all on this entire forum a very Merry Christmas.

Your doing well of late badgerboy.
Anyone got any alternative points systems, not that i feel my system is bad but merely a request for any ideas in the event that i may begin a new competition next season, possibly even one for Euro 2008 and other leagues globally. Any suggestions would be grateful and will all be carefully considered.

Nice try Stephen - but I'm not that hungover.
I believe you'll find that the weekly points tally should read:

would you do a fa cup comp from round 3!loads of matches and interest till the end of the season?as for the prem comp i would change the points to 1 home 1 draw 1 away and 3 points for a correct score prediction.what about a champs league or/and uefa cup comp next season or the rest of this season if you can be arsed as you are more of a whizz on the computer than the rest of us!especially me!

I will consider the FA Cup comp mate, as for the UEFA Cup, i am not sure many would be too interested as most only feel the Champions League exists. I will also consider your points system on the Premier League but will continue the current points system until the end of the season. Thanks for the input blue nose, take care and dont over do it with that mulled wine .

My choice for next year would be the same as the one I had at the start of this: - 2 points for predicting the correct outcome (whether home win, draw or away win) and one additional point for getting the correct score.
I personally think getting the right outcome is the main thing - correct score is more "lucky" - so wouldn't award too many points for it.
Edit: By the way on the scores for Boxing Day I believe you owe Rotku an extra point. Unfortunate as that puts him one ahead of me on the overall leaderboard.

There`s nothing special at this moment. There is a break for Turkish super league ( 3 weeks ) and there are many thrash transfer news on the newspapers. One coming , other going according to the papers, but nothing really happens. Only, Besiktas JK signed slovak forward Holosko from Manisaspor for 5 million euro + 2 players. Major part of the football community in Turkey think that Holosko is overvalued.

I play in a similar competition that runs for 38/40 weeks throughout the season. Slightly different in that although we get 3 points for a draw, we get four points for a no score draw. We are also given 10 players, one from each of 10 games over the weekend and if we pick a scorer out of those (we are allowed one choice) we get a bonus point for each goal he scored. We also play a bonus 5 points question which is normally quite easy. The games are normally 6 PL, one each from Nationwide and SPL. Varies for Cup weekends and international breaks. Prizes for winners. (Last year it was a signed Brazil shirt by Ronaldinho.) Good fun. Except I'm not doing so well this year.

Thanks for that information Andrew, it gives me ideas to introduce different points systems in future competitions. I would have to get badgerboy's approval however . Seriously though, badgerboy has corrected my errors on more than a few occasions and i do appreciate his help. Others have also helped me along the way also to which i also owe a lot to. Thanks again mate.

Can rotku, thrall and g woodside please enter the predicted score for Chelsea v Tottenham. I made an error by omitting this game and adding Birmingham City v Chelsea at the bottom, a fixture that does not exist. I have noted all other predictions. I appologise any inconvenience this may have caused.

Added one point each for rotku and thrall for the Chelsea v Tottenham game due to my error. As it was a home win it was only right to add this one point to both players. I thought hard about adding two points each but decided one point was suficient enough. Hope both thrall and rotku understand my decision. Apologies for my error.
