Re: The Big Issue, Jul 2008: Best summer transfer?

With Milan's spending apparently at an end according to Adriano Galliani it must be judged as a mixed performance. The cut-price addition of Ronaldinho may prove to be the deal of the summer if he can recapture the form he showed in his early days at the Camp Nou. However, whether Ancelotti can revive Ronaldinho's passion for the game, and where he fits into a team already boasting Kaka, Seedorf and Pato seems unclear.

The return to the San Siro of Marco Boriello could be the signing Milan have needed so badly since Shevchenko's departure, though hopefully his arrival will not lead to Pato being left out. If Boriello can deliver the sort of performances that he put in at Genoa last year then Milan may have a formidable attack to contend with.

Elsewhere the signing are less convincing. Zambrotta remains one of the world's great full-backs and his ability to play on either flank will prove a considerable asset. At 31 though Zambrotta joins a defence desperate for an injection of youthful vigour. The departure of Cafu was a step in the right direction, but Maldini's volte face over his retirement may prove a mistake. Furthermore the lack of a new goalkeeper is likely to leave Milan exposed. Neither Dida nor Kalac has proven up to the task yet, and the rumours of a move for Boruc have not yet materialised.

In central midfield the signing of Flamini leaves Ancelotti with a surplus of holding players. Plainly Pirlo is the only "untouchable" among them, but with players of the calibre of Gattuso and Ambrosini available it seems unlikely that they can all be kept happy.
