Borussia Monchengladbach coach Dick Advocaat has resigned after only six months in charge at the club.

The former coach of the Dutch mational team handed in his resignation just two days after Gladbach’s disappointing 1-1 home draw with Mainz.

That result left them just one point above the Bundesliga relegation zone, prompting Advocaat to step down.

“In the current situation the most important thing is what’s best for the club,” Advocaat said.

“I think that my resignation will help take the pressure off the club and the team and I hope it is a step in the right direction to making sure we don’t get relegated.”

Former Borussia Dortmund coach Horst Koppel has been appointed as Advocaat’s replacement on a caretaker basis.
