Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Agger has not played for the first team since September after suffering a broken metatarsal.

The Dane did make a return in the reserves last month, but he has struggled to shake off the underlying problem.

Liverpool have decided that it is in the player’s long-term interests to undergo another operation to fully correct the problem.

Anfield boss Rafa Benitez admitted it was a blow to lose Agger, but he is confident that he has enough defensive cover at his disposal.

“It’s a blow for Daniel but we want to get his problem sorted,” Benitez told the club’s official website.

“We have defensive cover and Martin Skrtel is playing very well. Daniel will be back for next season.”
