Argentinian international midfielder Pablo Aimar has signed for Benfica from relegated Spanish First Division side Real Zaragoza.
The 28-year-old, capped over 50 times by his country as well as being a veteran of two World Cups, has agreed a four-year deal worth €7.5million.
Zaragoza communications director, Luis Sol, said: “He is about to sign a contract with Benfica. Between Zaragoza and Benfica everything is sorted out. The doors are open for Aimar to become a Benfica player.”
Aimar previously worked under Benfica’s new Spanish scoach Quique Flores during his time at Valencia from 2000 to 2006.
News of Aimar’s signing will be a blow to Newcastle United who had attempted to hijack the Argentinian’s move to Benfica.
