Abel Alves has resigned as Boca Juniors coach following a defeat that dropped the club into 19th place in the 20-team Clausura tournament.

The move comes following a 3-0 loss to Colon. Alves was reported to have had a confrontation with goalkeeper Javier Garcia before the defeat to Colon, when Alves told him he would not be playing in the match.

Martin Palermo, the club’s all-time scoring leader, called the club’s slump “the worst” in his years with Boca. He played for Boca in 1997-2000 and rejoined in 2004 after a stint in Spain.

Alves is the third Boca coach in less than a year to leave the club.

Alves replaced Alfio Basile in January. Basile took over for Carlos Ischia, who left 10 months ago after Boca were knocked out of the final 16 of the Copa Libertadores.
