Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti last night praised Pippo Inzaghi after the striker scored the only goal in Milan’s 1-0 defeat of Borussia Dortmund.

‘He is a man for important goals and he was decisive again today,’ Ancelotti said.

‘This was a big step forward,’ said Ancelotti. ‘I like the position we’re in.’

Milan are now clear at the top of Champions League group with four points from two games after Real Madrid were held 2-2 by Moscow Lokomotiv.

‘We defended extremely well and that was the key,’ Ancelotti added. ‘I thought we played really well.’

Dortmund coach Matthias Sammer was angry with his players for losing the game.

‘We’ve only got ourselves to blame,” he said. ‘Milan are one of the top teams in Europe but, with all due respect for them, they could be beaten. We just didn’t try hard enough.

‘It’s not easy when you have to dictate play against opponents who concentrate on defending and you have to do it on a frozen pitch. ‘I can only remember one chance for them and that was the goal. It’s infuriating because they were beatable.’
