Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that David Beckham will arrive at an important time for the club.

The England midfielder will move to the San Siro on loan in January before returning to Los Angeles Galaxy in March for the start of the new Major League Soccer season.

Milan are currently fourth in the Serie A table and have been affected by a number of injuries to key players.

Gennaro Gattuso is out for the season with knee ligament damage and Ancelotti hopes Beckham can help give the squad a lift.

He said: “At this point, Beckham becomes even more useful and important to us, although he doesn’t have the characteristics of Gattuso.”

Milan lost 4-2 to Juventus on Sunday evening and Ancelotti acknowledged that he may have to bolster his defence in the new year.

“We are too vulnerable in defence. We have conceded too many opportunities and that annoys me,” he said.

“The difference between the two sides was defensively. Juve have taken advantage of our mistakes and we have given away four goals, that’s too many.”
