The new Italian anti-hooligan legislation is starting to take effect.
Two Lazio fans have been arrested in Rome on charges of violent conduct two days after trouble before the derby against Roma on Saturday.
A recent, controversial change in the law gave police up to three days to pursue and arrest hooligan suspects. Until then, hooligans had been permitted virtual carte blanche to cause mass trouble because arrests were permitted only at the time of the offence.
The first ‘delayed’ arrests under the new legislation were made a fornight ago after crowd trouble forced the abandonment of the Torino v Milan Serie A match.
