Former World Cup winner, Osvaldo Ardiles, is set to sign an extended deal as coach of Tokyo Verdy, officials of the Japanese club said on Thursday.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United manager will sign a deal keeping him at Verdy until January 2006.

Ardiles, who has also coached J-League rivals Yokohama F-Marinos and Shimizu S-Pulse, took over Verdy in June last year but has strugggled to turn around the fortunes of the once-successful club.

“Next year will be a year where we must challenge,” the 52-year-old told a news conference.

“I think it will be possible for us to be aim for the top.”
