Newcastle have been cut for the drop after their opening 3-0 defeat at Man United – see the Premiership relegation best odds on every club.

Sevilla have confirmed they are in talks with Arsenal over the possible transfer of Sebastien Squillaci.

The France defender was reportedly left out of the Spanish side’s Champions League play-off clash with Braga in order to avoid being cup-tied.

Arsenal are looking for a new centre-back after defenders William Gallas, Sol Campbell, Mikael Silvestre and Philippe Senderos were all allowed to leave the North London club at the end of last season.

Arsene Wenger has already signed Laurent Koscielny and it looks like another Frenchman could be arriving at the Emirates Stadium.

“The player asked not to play because of the offer from such a big team but, for the moment, we believe the offer is insufficient and Squillaci is still a Sevilla player,” said Sevilla sporting director Ramon Rodriguez after the La Liga outfit’s 1-0 defeat at Braga on Wednesday.

Sevilla added a statement on their official website: “Sebastien Squillaci’s future is in the air.

“As was confirmed by sporting director Ramon Rodriguez at the airport in Porto, the club have received an offer from Arsenal.

“The player asked coaches not to play him in the match.”
