Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta will make a permanent switch from Real Sociedad to Everton, subject to a medical, the Spanish side said on Friday.

The clubs have agreed a fee of 2.9 million euros (£2m) for the 23-year-old but there has been disagreement on Arteta’s wage demands of £33,000 a week.

A statement on the Spanish club’s website said they expected an agreement to be reached “in the next few hours.”

It added: “Everton asked him to travel as soon as possible to Liverpool to pass a medical and conclude the deal.”

Areteta moved on loan at Goodison Park for the second half of last season following Thomas Gravesen’s departure for Real Madrid.

He had spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Rangers, before returning to Sociedad last summer.
