Midfielder Michael Ballack has been named as Germany’s new captain, replacing goalkeeper Oliver Kahn.

The appointment comes ahead of Germany’s friendly international against Austria on Wednesday.

“I wanted as the captain an outfield player who was in contact with all members of the team,” confirmed new Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

“Ballack is exactly the linkman I had imagined.

“I spoke with both players about this and both accepted the decision. Oliver Kahn will deputise for Ballack in future,” Klinsmann added.
