Barcelona are ready to make a move for Manchester City striker Nicolas Anelka.

The Spanish league leaders are anxious to strengthen their attack during January’s transfer window after losing a number of players through injury.

Anelka’s future at Manchester looks doomed following after he revelaed he wanted to play for a club in the Champions League.

Given City’s precarious financial position they would be unable to resist a cash bid for the French forward. However, Barcelona are only looking to sign a player on loan until the end of the season – a proviso which could scupper the possibility of a switch in January.

Barcelona porting director Txiki Beguiristain told skysports.com the catalans were anxious to bring in fresh firepower.

“We expressly need a striker to help the team and, at this moment, that is our priority,” Txiki Beguiristain told skysports.com
