Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez fears that his career at Old Trafford could soon be over.

The French internationbal keeper was dropped from the squad that beat Tottenham 2-0 on Sunday and Barthez regards that decision as a portent of things to come.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insisted that Barthez was in need of a rest at the weekend but the Frenchman told The Sun today: ‘

It seems I am not good enough,’ told The Sun.

‘I don’t know what my future is now.’

The 31-year-old keeper has four years remaining on his current contract but has come in for criticism for his erratic form this season, in particular his poor performance during United’s Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.

United are now understood to be to be interested in Southampton keeper Antti Niemi . Other targets include Rennes’ Petr Cech and Leeds’ Paul Robinson
