England under-19 coach Stuart Baxter has been named as the new coach of South Africa.

The 50-year-old succeeds Shakes Mashaba who was dismissed shortly before the recent African Cup of Nations.

“We are satisfied with our choice for the job. He has impeccable references and impressed us very much when we met with him,” said Veli Mahlangu – South African Football Association (SAFA) official.

Baxter is currently the England Under-19 coach and is involved in Sven-Goran Eriksson’s setup – but The English Football Association have not prevented him from making the move.

Baxter will take charge on AprilÊ1, and his first match will be their opening World Cup qualifying double-header against the Cape Verde Islands.
