Bayern Munich’s French defender Willy Sagnol could miss the rest of the season after injuring his knee during their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Milan.

“He’s got a serious meniscus injury,” Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said.

“In the next few days he will undergo an operation and in all probability he won’t be able to play for us again this season,” Hitzfeld added.

Sagnol, Bayern’s captain, was replaced after 68 minutes by Christian Lell when the score was still 1-0 to Milan.

Bayern equalised through a Daniel Van Buyten header, but then conceded a controversial penalty when Kaka was adjudged to have been fouled by Lucio. Kaka converted the spot-kick, only for Bayern to grab a second equaliser in injury time, again through Van Buyten.
