Newcastle are the early favourites to win The Championship next season and bounce straight back into the Premiership.

Bayern Munich manager Uli Hoeness has revealed that a “non-concrete” enquiry has been made by Manchester United regarding French winger Franck Ribery.

The France international still has two years left to run on his current Bayern contract, but the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona have all been linked with his name.

United’s interest stems from the protracted Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga, with the club regarding Ribery as a ready-made replacement should their Portuguese star opt to move to Madrid.

“I would really not even answer the phone if the amount would just be £34 million,” Uli Hoeness told Sport-Bild.

“There was a casual request from Manchester United. But then it depends on Cristiano Ronaldo.”
