Franz Beckenbauer has confirmed that he will stand for a seat on the FIFA executive committee.

Beckenbauer, the former World Cup winning captain and coach, and the man who was in charge of the organising committee for the World Cup, made his announcement during the German football federation’s (DFB) extraordinary congress.

“In January I will be a candidate for a seat on FIFA’s executive committee,” revealed Beckenbauer.

“I will be honoured to represent German and European football at the heart of FIFA and I should get elected.”

Beckenbauer, 60, will succeed UEFA’s current representative Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, who announced he was stepping down from all his roles, including that of DFB joint president.
