David Beckham hit back at his growing number of critics after grabbing the winner for Real Madrid.

The England captain has come under attack in recent months following some disappointing performances for England.

However, Beckham fired in a trademark free kick to ensure Real a 1-0 win over Numancia on Saturday, a strike which he hopes will silence his critics.

“I don’t play to make other people who criticise me happy,” said Beckham.

“I’m happy today not just for my goal but because I played good football.

“There’s always pressure for England and Real Madrid but I’m used to it.

“I always ‘get it’ when I don’t have a good game. I haven’t had a good game for three years apparently.

“It was nice to score from a free kick after not scoring one here in my first year.”

Beckham’s team-mate Ronaldo has backed his colleague.

“David came into the side impressively last year and has continued to play well for us,” said the Brazilian.

“I know what has been said in England. But people should feel lucky to have him. It is a lot better to have him on your side than him playing against you.

“I can’t see any problems with his form. Many times for Real when the team has been in trouble David has been the man in charge.

“He has become one of the team’s leaders.”
