Wales and Newcastle United striker Craig Bellamy has been summoned to appear before magistrates over an incident in Cardiff city centre in the early hours of Monday morning.

Bellamy is alleged to have been involved in an fracas outside a nightclub.

South Wales police said in a statement: “A 23-year-old man has been reported for summons in relation to a public order offence to appear at Cardiff Magistrates Court at a date yet to be fixed.”

“We were investigating after a man was allegedly verbally and racially abused at 1240 am at the Millennium Plaza on Monday.”

In a statement, Bellamy’s solicitors said: “Craig Bellamy firmly and categorically denies that any racist comments in relation to this incident were made.”
