Newcastle’s striker Craig Bellamy has flown to America to receive treatment on his troubled knee.

The Welsh international will see Dr Richard Steadman, a renowned surgeon based in Colorado, who has operated on team-mate Alan Shearer and Real Madrid striker Ronaldo.

Bellamy reportedly felt some pain in the knee that was operated on in May, but Newcastle manager Bobby Robson has stressed that the trip is simply a check-up, and the 22 year-old will not need further surgery.

“Bellamy’s trip is just a precautionary one and my feeling is that the current problem is not an operational thing,” revealed Robson.

“It’s really just to establish some confidence amongst everybody that nothing needs to be done.”
