Benfica have denied having tried to lure Sir Bobby Robson away from Newcastle.
Sir Bobby was reported in the Newcastle media to have said that the Lisbon club approached him after dismissing Jesualdo Ferreira as coach at the start of this month.
In the end they appointed former Spain boss Jose Antonio Camacho – under whom they have won both their subsequent matches.
Benfica said: “We wish to formally dissociate Benfica from suggestions that attempts were made to attract Sir Bobby Robson away from Newcastle United.”
