According to reports in Spain, Valencia coach Rafael Benitez is expected to inform the club that he wants to quit to take over at Liverpool.

The Primera Liga club have offered Benitez a two-year extension, but according to Radio Marca he is disapointed that the club will not back him with an increased transfer fund and so will join Liverpool.

A Valencia spokesman said: “Benitez is set to make his decision on whether or not he’s going to extend his contract.”

Liverpool admit they intend to confirm the identity of Gerard Houllier’s successor within a fortnight.

“There will be an announcement about our new manager in two weeks,” said Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry.

Benitez, who led Valencia to the Spanish title and the UEFA Cup this season, is favourite to replace Houllier, although should he remain in Spain, Charlton’s Alan Curbishley is believed to be next in line.
