Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has dismissed the speculation linking him with a swoop for cash-troubled Valencia’s midfielder David Silva.

Silva has been tipped to become the first signing of the summer at Anfield, but Benitez has refuted the claim on the club’s official website.

“We will not be signing him,” he said.

Benitez did confirm though, that there are targets in place.

“We are working hard, talking with the scouting department and looking at names and options for next season,” he said. “It’s still too soon, but we are working hard.”

Despite the club’s recent impressive form, Benitez warned Liverpool fans not to get ahead of themselves because Manchester United still lead the league.

“Football can change very quickly and that is why we say it is important to just take one game at a time,” he said.

“Everything can change each week and maybe next week we can be at the top again. My message to the fans is to keep calm. I can see the people have a lot of confidence at the moment and that is good. We have to stay positive and see what happens.”
