Dennis Bergkamp and Paolo Maldini are set to be investigated by their country’s respective FAs after being embroiled in controversial clashes at the weekend.

Arsenal forward Bergkamp appeared to stamp on Blackburn defender Nils-Eric Johansson during his team’s 2-1 defeat on Saturday, but Referee Graham Barber missed the incident, and it is now likely the FA disciplinary committee will become involved.

“We haven’t received the referee’s report yet, which will confirm if he didn’t see the incident,” said a spokesman for the FA.

“The referee is the authority on the field of play, so we will look at the report and decide what further action, if any, is needed.”

If found guilty Bergkamp faces a three match suspension.

In Italy, Milan defender Maldini could face a similar fate after being seen to kick out at former San Siro team mate Oliver Bierhoff during Milan’s defeat at Chievo.

The Maldini clash was also missed the referee, and Milan’s Serie A rivals Juventus and Inter Milan are calling for the FA to act.

“If the kind of treatment reserved to Gigi Di Biagio is not the same with everyone then that means his ban was unjust,” said Inter coach Hector Cuper.
