Athletic Bilbao have been awarded a 2-1 victory over Real Betis after their match was abandoned.

The game was called off with Bilbao 2-1 when Bilbao goalkeeper Armando Ribeiro was struck by a bottle thrown from the stands.

It had been suggested that the game be replayed, but Athletic were keen for the scoreline to stand, with 69 minutes of the game gone.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation have now confirmed the result and that Betis have also been given a two-match stadium ban and fined £7,000 for their fan’s behaviour

“The result will stand from when the game was stopped,” read a statement on the RFEF’s official website.

“Betis will be fined 9,000 euros and will have their sporting facilities closed for two matches.”
