Bochum have sacked coach Marcel Koller after their disappointing start to the season.

Koller took over at Bochum in 2005 and led them back to the Bundesliga in his first season in charge before helping them stay up for the next three seasons.

However, Bochum have lost four of their opening six games and Saturday’s 3-2 home defeat to Mainz was the final straw for the club’s board.

Bochum sports director Thomas Ernst offered a glowing testimony for the week he had carried out during his four years at the club.

“We owe Marcel Koller a lot,” said Ernst. “We are in our fourth consecutive year in the top flight under him and that had not happened since our first relegation in 1993. We wish him all the best.”
