Eccentric Atletico Madrid keeper, German Burgos, has undergone a successful operation to remove a tumour from his left kidney, dispelling fears over his career and health.
Although initially diagnosed as flu, sharp abdominal pains convinced Atletico Madrid medical staff that the condition was more serious and it this prompt action prevented the cancer from spreading.
Club President, Jesus Gil, announced his delight following the successful two hour procedure and indicated that the Argentine keeper, nicknamed “El Mono” (the Monkey), could be back playing before the end of the season.
Burgos, who takes the lead in his own rock band, was highly regarded by doctors at the Madrid hospital and praised by his team-mates for his courage.
